STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I have always been deeply influenced by the effectiveness of science and technology as a powerful tool to bring about constructive transformation in the lives of people. As my immediate ancestors were farmers by profession, I have closely observed the situations in which rural folks are compelled to live. All these formative influences sensitized me to their plight and so I am inspired to use my knowledge and abilities to devise products and solutions that can improve their miserable conditions by alleviating problems of health, poverty and illiteracy.
I have been an academically oriented student securing scholarships at both school and during my undergraduate studies. Owing to my deep interest in science and mathematics I participated in many Olympiads and quizzes in school. I demonstrated my passion to deploy marvels of technology to resolve problems in a project based on nanotechnology for treatment of diseases like cancer at a science exhibition organized by Directorate of Education, Govt.NCT Delhi (2004). The innovative project idea earned applause at zonal, district and state level. The experience reinforced my resolve to work in the direction of using technology as a way to uproot problems that adversely affect the society thereby enhancing quality of life of the people. With this motivation, I decided to take up Engineering for my studies. I wrote the engineering entrance examination in 2007 and stood among top 15% of the applicants.
My rigorous undergraduate program has given me strong grasp in physics, embedded systems, control systems, microprocessor, microcontrollers, and computer networks. I developed a deep interest in the practical course work of Microcontrollers as it is the foundation to develop projects and technologies that can be effective in solving problems faced by the common man. I decided to take up Electronic Nose as my final year project(Oct'10-May'11) with an objective to devise ground breaking solutions. The project is an 8051 based Electronic Smelling System that can be used to identify an object based on its odor. An array of 5 gas sensors constitutes the sensor chamber that provides input depending upon the odor of the introduced object. This data is controlled and transmitted to the computer by 8051 .The project uses pattern recognition and feed forward neural network for identifying the object. The neural network is trained by back propagation method using delta rule. My project was adjudged as the Best Engineering Project in Electronics and Electrical Department by Faridabad Industries association at a state level competition.
My association withXXXXX Systemz from August'10-Nov'10 during which I worked on a critical projectxxxx at their Research and Development Centre in Gurgaon further honed my technical skills and gave me the chance to learn industry practices. I worked earnestly on the Embedded design and software of the product- IRIS which is a surveillance robot based on Atmega with audio video transmission capability and uses Zigbee network. I also worked on the wireless networking of the sensor robot with the controller at a frequency of 5.8Ghz and was involved in the hardware designing of the robot sensor.
I have always had a deep inclination to pursue independent project work. I was the Technical Coordinator of the technical club of my college and so constantly involved myself in several small projects. I worked on Line follower robots, sensor modules, voltage regulator circuit and 8051trainer kits to teach students . I also developed a digital clock using a GPS receiver. I undertook industrial training during my under graduation that helped me refine my technical and interpersonal skills. I visited IIT Delhi lab where I observed various ongoing research projects. I developed a home based security system using Microcontroller 8051 as part of the training (June2007). Also the hands-on experience at Centre for Research in Cognitive Systems, xxxxxx was precious. During this training I developed a microcontroller based user interface for a GPS module that displayed time, latitude and longitude of a place on LCD. I learned various industrial processes involving circuit designing using AUTOCAD, implementing designs on the hardware and testing. I independently completed the hardware and developed software in assembly language and implemented it after customizing it as per requirements.
Success in Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist Exam was a feather to my cap. I got selected by Microsoft as a Microsoft students Partner. Thus I added to the glory of my college. As campus ambassador, I orchestrated the task of introducing new technologies to students and teachers from forefront in our college and other institutions. I delivered seminars, presentations and organized technical talks and events on new technologies such as cloud computing, Windows Surface etc.
Currently I am employed with xxxxwhere I am a part of the project, xxx.In this nationwide project, remote desktops providing educational solutions are installed in government schools for underprivileged students. I was responsible for developing a Windows based musical application including MIDI interfacing, that can be run using both keyboard and mouse on Visual Studio Platform and will help children to learn music.
Besides academics, I have undertaken some worthwhile and notable endeavors resulting in positive changes in living standards of people from marginalized sections of the society. I have been actively associated with projects under the aegis of various NGOs, "The Faith", ''TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute)" and "LITERACY INDIA''. As an active member of 'Literacy India', I teach fundamentals of computer architecture and programming to poor children. The involvement has given me a lot of satisfaction. I also launched a campaign in college to provide relief measures to the victims of Bihar flood. In recognition of my social work initiatives I was nominated by my college in the First "Youth Conference on Climate Change" held in Delhi, organized by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India and TERI. Ability to express myself eloquently has been my forte that played an instrumental role in my aforesaid selection.
Consistently enjoying studies, I have not curtailed my extracurricular pursuits as I have always focused on developing myself as a versatile personality. Also I have also learned efficient time management. I am trained in Bharatnatyam, an Indian classical dance form that combines elegance with poise. I also hold junior diploma in Hindustani Classical Music and I am proficient at playing the musical instrument, sitar. I was also a member of the organizing team of Epiphany, the cultural and technical fest of my college. A cherished leadership experience was when I led my college team for an event in which we bagged the first prize. In a fest that we organized at IIT Roorkee, my college team was selected among top 12 teams from across the nation. I believe that I would add to the diversity of the class by virtue of these unique experiences
I wish to contribute to research in my chosen domain by developing intelligent systems which requires proficiency in embedded systems and in-depth understanding of artificial intelligence. My propensity for teaching led me to volunteer a few lectures on Embedded systems and Neural Networks during 6th and 7th semester. It was a tremendously gratifying experience. I have been motivated to pursue Masters in Electrical with focus on embedded systems, robotics and artificial intelligence. The research activities at Center for Autonomous Systems , Center for Embedded Systems for Critical Applications gathered my attention. I am particularly inspired by the research works of Prof. xxxxx.
My prowess at viewing and analyzing issues from varied perspectives and ability to multitask are my strengths. I am eager to involve myself in the cutting-edge research at xxxx University. Moreover, I would like to highlight diversity of Indian culture through my knowledge of Indian languages and classical music and dance forms. Thus I have a full conviction that my association with the university would be symbiotic and my stint there mutually beneficial and multidimensional. With aspirations to enrich the diversity of community and substantiate my skills I am keen to immerse myself in its cosmopolitan fraternity.
