I have a few questions, sorry if I am repeating previous questions but its easier to look for them in this one spot than to dig them up all over.

1.Is it alright to mention Professors names whom have helped you/ you look up to / you worked with in your SOP?
2.Should I state what University I am coming from in the statement or does that matter?
3. Is it alright to use major specific jargon? (i.e. nihonjinron, sankinkotai, samurai, daibutsu, etc)
4. Should I assume that the reader knows about the major I am applying for and therefore not need to explain certain things (like the jargon above)? Or should I write like they know what I am saying?

5. Should I sign the botton of it? (i.e. Andrea Gill, B.A. Asian Studies, University of Tennessee)

Thank you for the help. I will post more questions if I think of any.

I am about to apply to grad school as well, and I don't know any better than you do. So, the following are just my opinions:

1.Is it alright to mention Professors names whom have helped you/ you look up to / you worked with in your SOP?

Yes, especially, if you have done some research work under their supervision. Also, if the prompt asks you to tell about someone who inspired you, then you have to name them.

2.Should I state what University I am coming from in the statement or does that matter?

Not necessary if you are including your CV.

3. Is it alright to use major specific jargon? (i.e. nihonjinron, sankinkotai, samurai, daibutsu, etc)

Yep. The person reading it will be quite familiar with the subject and its terms.

4. Should I assume that the reader knows about the major I am applying for and therefore not need to explain certain things (like the jargon above)? Or should I write like they know what I am saying?

Same as above.

5. Should I sign the botton of it?

Yes.

By the way, I like your username :D

Hi Andrea,

These are great questions. I think Ershad gave some good advice, for sure. Do not be redundant and give info that has already been given in other parts of the application. Do not worry about the reader being able to understand the lingo... Even if they are confused, Google can set them straight.

I think mentioning a prof with whom you identify is very good. Citing her articles briefly is even better.

As for whether you should sign the bottom of it... if it is to be a letter, it is obviously good to sign it. If it is not a letter, signing it still makes it personal and nice, and this does not reflect badly on you. If no one else puts a closing salutation and you do, that will not reflect negatively on you. It will set you apart in a good way.

Good luck! You seem like someone who can help a lot of people here at EssayForum!

Kind regards

:-)
