Hi

I really really need help & thus hope you guys can help me out. I have never written an entrance paper before i.e. Statement of Purpose and need some advice for getting into an Ivy League School for their Communications program.

I graduted in Marketing. Communications is something I've realized I want to learn more about. It's exciting and theres a huge scope for it. I feel having earned a Communications masters will open new doors for me. I havent taken alot of communication courses in univ, perhaps 2, but I hope that doesnt make a difference. As Communications is so vast I have the ability to choose from entering any industry I want, be it in the media field, the banking (as a PR) or even in the hospitality field. In the next 5 yrs, I see myself running my own PR agency or probably working as a executive in a multinational media organization. I've had work expeicne in the financial, healthcare, consultancy industries as a marketing exec. During high school, I was an active student being involved in hosting/arranging events be it sporting events or alumni events.

Currently, im working on my GRE general test. I have to submit my SOP by October and I'm really stressing out.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks.

p.s. please excuse my spelling mistakes - SOMETIMES when I type fast I tent to overlook grammatical mistakes!

What you have here is some of the raw material you will need to write your SoP. You will need, in your SoP, to be much more specific about your interest in communication and what you envision doing with the degree. Graduate programs like students who have a clear sense of purpose rather than a general sense that the degree will help them enter some vaguely defined career. Once you know the focus of your statement of purpose, then you can select some anecdote from your life or fact about yourself with which to begin the statement. But, before doing anything else, you must clarify and specify your purpose in seeking this advanced degree.

hey, thanks for the reply. Actually what I wrote wasnt even part of the SoP - that was just me telling you a little about me!

How can I better specify and clarify my sop when the reason is simple: I am passionate about public relations/advertising and such; communications (masters) wil give me that to oppurtunity to further open doors to not only be able to work in organizations as a PR executive but also, start my own business.

"and such"... "open doors"... "PR executive"... "own business" -- all of these are exceedingly vague.

What, exactly, will you be able to do with the Masters degree that you would not be able to do without it? What, specifically, are you interested in learning? How, precisely, do you intend to put that knowledge to work?

but I hope that doesn't make a difference.

If it doesn't make a difference, why do you bring it up?

And Simone is right. You should prefer the specific to the general, and be as detailed as possible in describing your ambitions.
