Hi all,
I need your suggestions for my below essay. Any comment is welcomed and appreciated!
Topic: Describe your contribution to a project which was successful and to another which was unsuccessful. What did you learn about management, implementation problems and yourself from these experiences?
Leadership and management skills are not only classroom knowledge; they are hand-on knowledge and could be learnt by successes and failures. With me, experiences truly hone up my skills acquired from school.
AAA is an international competition for 17,000 teams of students all over the world. The purpose is to use sound business strategy to maximize a virtual company's profit in a limited period. Inspired by my seniors, I led a team of three aiming to the final round of the region. We are confident that we then had a chance to present our business ideas to AAA management in CITY. Excited about this opportunity, we put tremendous effort in reading business papers and doing research. It was incredibly rewarding and we ranked in the top 20 for the first 2 rounds. However, to my surprise, the further we went the more different in approaching problem we became. Each of us is too enthusiastic to demonstrate and defend our own ideas. There was no more leadership, common goal and our spirit slowly broken down. Until the last day of decision, we still could not resolve our arguments to finalise the decision. Consequently, we did not manage to get into the final round.
Being regretted and disappointed, I learnt a valuable lesson from this failure. A good team leader needs to be decisive at crucial time. Furthermore, a team should be persistently reminded on the common goal and everyone should be straightforward in resolving any internal problem. Only then, success could be guaranteed.
After working for COMPANY for a year, I volunteered for the first EVENT in CITY. I believed that my experience in public service could be useful for this national event. At the same time, I would acquire more global exposure that I am always eager to have. As a public officer, I was chosen to be a team leader for a team of 10. On daily basis, our team had to liaison cohesively with others departments to retrieve sport-related, prepare and confirm training for athletes, direct our customers to proper avenues or apprise them with other issues. Working from 6 am to mid-night, the workload was arduous for us. However, thanks to previous involvement in teamwork, I was able to keep communication in our team and realized that timely motivation and companionship was essential for team spirit. It was extra-ordinary to see thousands of people from different backgrounds and positions gathered and volunteered themselves for a national event. That experience at EVENT made me realize how national pride could bring people together and unite them to carry out any strenuous task. Moreover, I had certain occasions to exchange with some sport directors to have a deeper perspective on how EVENT might transform CITY into an international hub. In a large sense, the success of this event helped me thoroughly appreciate how sport could bring nations closer and contribute to the better world relationships.
After EVENT, I have received tremendous commendations from my peers and managers for my hard work and leadership. The project did not only bring me joyfulness and satisfaction; more importantly, it taught me that I am capable of inspiring people and driving my group to success.
