Hi everyone. I want to propose a master in US university. Your view in my essay will be highly appreciated!!!
Some term were 'censored' by me. The "XYXY" signs that the research topic is very original and i just do not want people to copy it. Sorry for this inconvenience.
I believe curiosity that makes me to live a real life. I believe the enthusiasm that triggers my adrenaline and raising my heartbeat that drives my real life. Therefore, I like new challenges.
I graduated from Petroleum Engineering in Institut Teknologi Bandung (Bandung Institute of Technology) Indonesia. I was not doing a great job in my undergraduate. My average grades were resulted from the lukewarm system from my college that hindered me to make me curious about lectures by the purpose of them. I did not understand the use of calculus or applied math for petroleum in real life. I did not know the purpose.
During my final assignment with Prof Doddy Abdassah, I finally know a little about having a purpose and apply possible 'instrument' to solve the problem. Prof. Doddy Abdassah is known as a high standard of perfection professor. I took the challenge because I like to try to work with the best. So, it was a new topic in my department: Coalbed Methane. I never know anything about it. But because I know that I have to finish the assignment in order to graduate, I manage myself to finish the problem, harder than ever. I was doing a great job. I try to describe the analytical model of coalbed methane and analyze the common material balance calculation. Using many mathematical approach, I modified the procedure of CBM material balance calculation based on G. R. King's paper (SPE 20730) and presented my paper (IPA10-E-112; Predicting The Production Profile Of Gas And Water Of CBM Field Using Material Balance Of Modified G.R. King's Iteration Procedure) in 34th IPA (Indonesian Petroleum Association) proceeding. Because it was a novel idea, I got many praises and admirations. From that point, I know the importance of applied mathematics to solve petroleum reservoir problem. And now I know the importance of calculus and applied math because I know the purpose.
Being not interested in working, I chose to join research of reservoir simulation study with Dr. Taufan M. and Dr. Sudjati Rachmat. I chose research because I developed more knowledge in research, and because to research means to investigate materials or sources to establish facts and new conclusions, the term invigorates my curiosity.
Once I got the dual porosity reservoir from XXX company. The task was new for me and a great opportunity. Initially it was a two years study of modeling, but I joined at the last eight months. It was a tedious task that I have to work day and night to complete the task and deadlines. I enforced myself to read many papers about the fracture concept and contacted my lectures about this matter. The model is so complicated because of the fracture characterization was appalling, resulting from the unavailable input data. Then I start to ask this simple question: How fracture is modeled?
I discussed with the new lecturer in Petroleum Engineering Department, Dr. Zuher Syihab. His dissertation was titled "Simulation of Discrete Fracture Network Using Flexible Voronoi Gridding". He suggested me to develop my self in finite element method to develop the fracture model due to the discontinuity system of fracture.
I discussed with Dr. Taufan M. He told me to have graduate study topic in order to tackle the present industrial problems. In the future, Indonesia will develop many shale gas blocks. The only way to produce the shale gas reservoir is by hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Now I know what to do in the future as a solution to the industrial problem: fracture XYXYXY.
Fracture XYXYX is the future challenge for me. I believe if I could XYXYXYXY, I will make a good management of hydraulic fracturing before apply to the real field.
Motivated by my Professors, I am moving forward to project my visions. I am still developing my curiosity through MIT Open Course Ware by watching Prof Klaus-Jurgen Bathe lectures of finite element method. Since the lecture's application is to the civil engineering, I still not get the application to the petroleum engineering.
And then I read the research website page of Dr. XXX of XXX. I think he defines a good emphasize of the hydraulic fracturing modeling using XFEM. Because I still not get the message about why Dr. XXX uses XFEM instead of Galerkin Method, it drives my curiosity to apply to XXX and perform a research study to model the hydraulic fracturing under the supervision of Dr. XXX. I imagine having a possible thesis's topic of XYXYXYXYXY.
Now I know my purpose. I am a manageable person if I know where to go. I did not perform well in my undergraduate study, but once I know my purpose, I am very determined of it. It is proven with my final assignment in undergraduate study and my long and tedious research on dual porosity model of Kodeco. I can not promise anything, but being admitted in XXX will be a great opportunity for me to contribute in providing adequate amount of energy to the communities in my country.
