STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
Having studied Electrical /Electronic at technical school about one and half decade and currently working with the Electricity Company of Ghana for about six years and also pursuing my BSc Electrical/Electronics in the Regional Maritime University, I therefore deem necessary to broaden in depth knowledge and an enthusiasm to solve the problem of power outages faced by the industry.
I am applying for MSc. Electrical/Electronic Engineering with specialization in Smart Grid Science and Technology since it will be a similar structure I want to achieve in life.
ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
I started my technical school in 2001 at St. Paul's Technical School where I learnt the various fundamentals of Electricals & Electronics Engineering together with practical course work and industrial attachment.
I am currently in my eighth semester of Undergraduate study offering BSc Marine /Electronic Engineering at the Regional Maritime University in Nungua-Accra. The four year undergraduate study has taught me that Engineering is as much as an art as it is a science. Creative instinct, excel fellowman ship and perceptiveness are the very gist of engineering. Engineering study not only imparts knowledge but also lays emphasis on the overall development of the individual. Besides broadening the range of my knowledge, it has given me valuable insight into practical aspects of study. I have acquainted myself with courses like: Power systems flow Analysis ,Project works ,Digital control system, Electric Motor Drives,Communication Engineering, Computer Aided Circuit Design, Radar System ,Linear System, Power Generation Transmission and Distribution,Microprocessor Systems and Application, Linear Systems,Research Method, Classical Control systems, Microwave Devices, Marine Electrical /Electronic Systems,Numerical Analysis, Power Electronics ,Digital Electronic,Electromagnetic Field, Programming Language(C++)Naval Architecture, Nautical Science ,Electronics, French
RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE
Being a final year student and currently in my last semester, I have started my final year project titled: Design and Construction of Data base system for fault finding, location and classification of distribution lines.. The objectives of my project are to:
Design a database system for the distribution network
Allow the system to classify fault, determine location and detect
And the aim of the project is to construct and develop a system that will help with early fault detection and have a database system that will keep log of maintenance work for distribution lines. This database will be established using MYSQL (My structured query language). It will keep log of the pole numbers synchronized with the sensors and in this the PT's and CT'S. The numbers are given differently in all metropolis and districts. This will help identify location easily. The log will also include the various types of fault that technicians deal with so as to classify them. I propose a software written in C+ embedded language to handle the monitoring of the measurement of the voltages and currents of the distribution lines.
The software interfaces with MySQL database. AS a database is created to have log of pole numbers synchronized with the various sensors which are placed at the ends of the nodes, location of the distribution lines, and classes of faults.
PT's and CT's measure voltages and currents at both ends of two nodes. When the parameters measured at one end differs from the other end a high or low will appear at the input of the microcontroller which also sends a signal to the database system of a detected fault.
This appears in the database and clearly shows the location and classifies the type of fault. In case of absence of a technician, the alarm which also receives the signal sent from the microcontroller sounds to the attention of the technicians or engineers.
WORK /OTHER EXPERIENCE
I gained admission into the Electricity Company of Ghana(ECG) Training Centre after passing both the psychometric and written exam in 2009.Being among the best during the test, I was then trained for sixteen months in the area of Electrical Operation and Maintenance of Sub-Station Equipment where I had experiences during my job training at their Sub-Transmission office in Accra where I went through different maintenance section such as Overhead line, Underground cable, Transformer, Switchgear and Protection & Control, and also through SCADA and control operations. After my training I have been posted to one of their Bulk Supply Point as High Voltage and SCADA operator where I performed tasks related to load monitoring, HV Switching, Load shedding and SCADA operations as well as training of new personnel
PERSONAL QUALITIES
I am a team player, and can work with other people, innovative, creative and analytical.
WHY EPFL SCHOOL?
While pondering to pursue a course in Smart Grid Technology, I have researched through the Internet and eventually I realized EPFL is so dynamic with so many researches and innovative ideas in depth knowledge in an area of speciality followed by the pratical experience in the laboratory. The cooperative & Development Center (CODED) has really impressed me because it promotes innovative technologies to support social, environmental and economic development.
CONCLUSION
Graduate study would give me frontline exposure to the technological advances made in this field and would allow me to contribute to its immense development. This is the reason for deciding to begin my graduate studies after obtaining some industrial experiences. I would like to continue with a research work with a combination with the PhD at EPFL.I envisage the future as setting up my own consulting firm in Ghana and across the West Africa. I would also like to contribute my share to my country by taking up a teaching position as a part time in the Technical Universities and possibly create a partnership university that will be affiliated to EPFL.
