My work experience with Infosys, the second largest Indian IT services organization, gave me enough opportunities to test my organizational skills. I remember an instance when we had an AS9100 audit for our project. The audit was particularly significant because our client was a big three aircraft manufacturer and safety is of prime concern when it comes to aerospace clients. We already had an important deliverable lined-up and the audit was coinciding with a major software release of our project. Being the Configuration Controller of the project, I was in charge of the audit and thus, I wanted to leave no stone unturned in making the audit a success and hence made sure that all the project artefacts, documents and codes were proper and in place. Although I was under constant pressure because of the lined-up project release, I worked closely with other team-members and helped them in wrapping-up the audit work on time. On the day of the audit, the auditor was extremely satisfied with particularly our project and said that he could not find a single flaw in the way the whole project was managed. My manager not only became happy but appreciated the entire team in front of the delivery manager for the grand success of the audit. The clients have always been satisfied with our organizational excellence and thus, forthright in giving us more business.
Being the captain of our team in an organization level sports tournament in which more than sixty-four teams participated, I faced a number of situations in which my morals and values were challenged. But I am proud to say that I did not compromise my values even once. I remember the time when our entire team was at the top of its voice, shouting and celebrating. But somewhere down my heart, I felt it was not what we deserved. It was a Friday evening and we had just won our volley ball pre-quarter final match. Yes, you heard it right, we had won it!! But why was my mind in turmoil? Should not I also be celebrating? Our one of the strongest volleyball teams of the tournament had won over a crippled team whose two players could not make it to the match because of ill health. Who would call that a fair victory? So, being a captain, I decided that we will not go ahead with this victory and that we will ask the organizers for a rematch. Thus, I called the organizers and told them about the restlessness my conscience was going through and that we should give our opponents a fair chance. Even though the organizers were running on a tight schedule, they respected our decision and agreed to give us a rematch. Eventually, we played the rematch against the full strength team of our opponents and this time we won with serenity and a peaceful mind. After we won our rematch, we were appreciated for our gesture not only by the organizers but also by our opponents. The other team members in our team, who had asked me to still go ahead with the previous victory, felt really great after the appreciation they received and learnt a very important lesson in life along with me. I was the captain of our team for two consecutive years and fortunately led a team of more than thirty teammates to podium finishes on both the occasions. The victories became worthwhile when my teammates told me that, "It was an honour to have me as a captain once again."
It becomes every individual and organization's moral responsibility to work towards the improvement of the society as a whole. That is why I chose to be a part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) group of my organization and took part in a number of initiatives taken by the group. I was a part of the 'Note book drive' for three consecutive years in which we provided underprivileged kids with school bag kits consisting of notebooks and various stationery materials. In the first year, I was the funds collection anchor for food courts. In the second and third years, I was a part of the procurement team and logistics and distribution team respectively. Working with the CSR group of my organization helped me in developing a more balanced view of various strata of the society and its evolving needs. At the same time, being a part of philanthropic activities has helped me in staying humble and grounded, and keeping things in perspective.
The businesses are there not just for profits but they are there to help the greater mankind. Therefore, it behoves us to constantly stand firmly by our values and offer our services for the betterment of the society. Keeping the above things in mind, I have stood by my values until now and would always go out of my way to practise the above value traits in my personal life and professional career.
