I have a LD, and need to show my drive for an OT masters. I am a little concerned it's too much.... let me know what you think. I'd like to keep it organized having the thought that I run with a purpose. Also- I am willing to pay an professional reader, does anyone have any good advice where to submit? Thanks.
Running with Purpose:
From Velcro orthotic for a post-surgical patient, to a racing flat for a runner always have a purpose; they know where you been and help you get to where you're going. These past few years, I have found my prefect fit within a shoe, and a career. Running is symbolic to my life-I continue to put my best foot forward, towards personal and professional goals which harmoniously speak to in all aspects of my life.
Today, I am a sole proprietor at Body Rest Massage Wellness Center. I created a practice serving a wide spectrum of clients with a special interest in runners, special needs children and geriatrics. Arvin is a 13-year-old client who diagnosed with severe Autism. His treatments go beyond a 30-minute massage. Techniques such as joint compression, and trigger point gives Arvin a multi-sensory stimulus to help reduce muscular tension and anxiety while allowing Arvin to develop trusting realtionships with other health care a professionals.
My boundless optimism towards helping special needs children such as Arvin ironically comes from a childhood struggle with academics. I am diagnosed with a cognitive processing disorder. My learning disability has been my biggest obstacle in my life acknowledging that I sometimes may take longer roads but I will always find a way to get there. This life challenege has shaped to become who I am today and serves as an underlyng motivation to help others. I challenge this academic hardship everyday by continuing my academics regadless of preuqusites, tutor fellow classmates, and utilize programs such as an auto/text reader.
On of my pre-OT volunteer hours were preformed at Saratoga Retirement Health Center. I provided patients with hands-on instruction for proper use of writing tools, played an active role demonstrating and assisting in gross motor exercises, wheelchair safety assessments, and the use of adaptive ADL equipment. I have a special interest in working with this population because my grandparents. I play an active role within their life and saw how OT can impact people in this life stage. I swim with Opa celebrating his independent active abilities, allowing him to feel significant regardless of his reality of a recent Alztimers diagnosis. My grandparents have always told me, I make them feel important, advocate for their well being while understanding their reality of aging. This experience gave magnetism to create a career path that suits me for my personal attributes-not only allowing me to make qualifying decisions for my grandparents, but patients that have Aging-associated diseases. This experience is when I realized that I found the perfect fit in a career, a profession that allows a therapist to utilizes tangible methods as well as addressing the cognitive needs of the patient and to think outside the box to address individual needs for that person.
My experiences, ambitious desire to learn and grow, problem solving abilities, charismatic personality serve special populations are mandated attributes for an exceptional OT. Every run empowers me to continue to always run with a purpose while striving to make big impacts understanding that many people face hurdles bigger then they can jump. OT will allow me to be apart of a career that is my prefect fit. I stand forth the commitment to begin my career as an Occupational Therapist at ---- Fall 2014.
