SOP for admission in masters in chemical and bioengineering

LETTER OF MOTIVATION
Chemical engineering is a broad and versatile discipline which deals with the development and application of processes that change materials either chemically or physically. Chemical engineers invent, design, and operate manufacturing processes that involve the chemical transformation of raw materials into products that are of value to mankind. The corresponding industry represents a significant economical factor: approximately 40% of the industrial turnover of Germany originates in processing industries and 15% of the entire world production can be attributed to the chemical industry.

Ever since from my childhood I wanted to become engineer my source of inspiration was my father who is engineer by profession. From the beginning of my studies I have more interest in mathematics and science subjects and I was among the class brightest students. After finishing my college with first division I took admission in chemical engineering at <uni name >. During my freshman year I studied basic engineering subjects like Engg Mechanics, Applied Physics and Chemistry. During my second and third year I have acquired a strong background in subjects like Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Chemical Process Technology, Stoichiometry ,Numerical Analysis, Computer Programming and Chemical Reaction Engg. In my last year I study Process Design And Simulation that is helpful in designing of new chemical plants .I used Chemcad software for designing .It was just awesome to design whole plant on computer and one can check the results by varying different process parameters, this software has minimize the need of pilot plant. My final year project was Hydrocracking Of Gas Oil, Gas oil obtained from atmospheric distillation unit contains heavier carbon atom and cannot be used directly, in order to meet the requirement hydro cracking of gas oil is done to produce gasoline and middle distillate products. Gasoline produce by this process is of better quality having higher octane number. I personally designed heat exchangers and pumps and did cost estimation of our plant.

I have also done two internships during my engineering. First one is at Nimir Chemicals Pakistan Ltd which is basically a petrochemicals industry. My second internship was at Pakistan Oil Fields Ltd which is an oil exploration and production company. During my first internship I became familiar with the manufacturing process of petrochemicals like Phthalic Anhydride, Di-Octyl Phthalate, Maleic anhydride. I practically observed the function of different equipment like heat exchanger, boiler, compressor ,pump cooling tower etc. I also visited plant control room and saw how the entire plant was automated and how the entire process could be monitored using the computers. It was just amazing that an entire plant was being controlled by just a few operators monitoring the various critical parameters at their terminals. This really kindled my interest in the usage of computers in chemical industries which led me to explore more applications of computers in chemical engineering. During my second internship I got a chance to visit an oil field and studied Crude Processing,H2S removal from crude oil, Amine Sweetening Process, Clause Process, LPG production, studied common problem in operation and their solution. After these internship I became more molded and mature with respect to my professional life. Topics such as Process control, Process optimization, Modeling and simulation really interested me. I was quite impressed by the mechanism how raw material are converted into useful products and the engineering that is involved to carry out these result is simply amazing. we just study a simple reaction like N2+3H2 2NH3 but in real there is a big industrial unit is installed to carry out that reaction.

Keeping my interest in mind I have decided to pursue my education in Chemical And Bioengineering at your esteemed institution. The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering was founded 39 years ago. Thus Erlangen is one of the oldest chemical engineering sites in Germany. Chemical and bioengineer are not only represented in the chemical industry, the spectrum ranges from the oil industry to pharmaceutical industry, the food processing and beverages industry, energy engineering and environmental protection section. Energy is one of the biggest issue of this century, the energy need of our planed has increased enormously and humanity is now dependent more and more on oil products due to which demand for safe, clean, affordable alternate energy is increasing sharply. Of the different technologies solar energy is considered the most effective and can even afford the environmental protection of plants. Many visionary think that rather biomass will probably convert the solar energy best and will replace all the fossil energy resources in the future. In the last decades, many companies have erected biogas plants worldwide. A lot of experience was gained, leading to a continuous process optimization of anaerobic fermentation and the development of new and more efficient applications. Overall, the basic knowledge of biogas production, the microorganisms involved, and the biochemical processes was widely extended.

Pakistan is also facing serious energy crisis and a lot of work is done to overcome this issue. The rural support program network is running the Pakistan domestic biogas program which has installed over 1500 biogas plants and aim to develop biogas sector in Pakistan. Currently we are working on multiple alternate energy sources like biogas, biodiesel , solar energy, wind energy etc. I wish after completing my studies I want to come back to Pakistani and serve my country as much as I can. I am confident that I have the preparation and potential to prove an asset to your graduate program as a graduate student. Thank you for your consideration. The corresponding industry represents a significant economical factor: approximately 40% of the industrial turnover of Germany originates in processing industries and 15% of the entire world production can be attributed to the chemical industry.

This is all true, but it does not reveal anything about you as aperson. The admission panel would be more interested to know you throuh your SOP and may not want read general stuff they already know.
