Dear Sir,
This is an initial version of what is expected to be a statement of purpose used for applying for a Master's of Health Care Policy. I am also applying for a Master's of Health Care Research and MPH too. consider this piece of work as an unspecific one, as i tend to use it for all kinds of applications. Thanks.
"I was part of this system, but enough is enough," this was the last thing I said to myself before I decide to switch my career. The system I am talking about here is the health care system in Egypt, and this system is one of the most dilapidated systems in the country. The health care system in Egypt suffers from all aspects; there is no effective and reliable system for performance control, there is no real health insurance system, substantial resources are not utilized optimally, and awareness among the citizens of common diseases, methods of treatment and how to prevent them need a lot of hard work. A health care system at this level of performance must leave thousands of innocent victims behind who did not have any guilt but being citizens of a country ruled by a corrupt system with all the sense of the word. And I had a personal share of these tragedies, I have lost my 82 years old grandfather during a hip replacement, his general conditions would have never allowed him to perform this operation but the surgeon's greed had the most powerful impact. Came out the doctor after two hours of the operation which was supposed to take 7 hours to announce the success of the operation and in half an hour my grandfather's heart arrested and he was transferred to the intensive care unit to die within 20 minutes, and then we discover later that the doctor did not even install the new joint. We did not see the doctor again; as he receives his fees in advance before the operation as is customary. Another case of medical negligence, a surgeon who is supposed to be a pioneer in his field; this doctor caused my father to suffer from Vascular Dementia. This happened due to uncontrolled high blood pressure following a surgery in the spinal cord canal which was not even necessary. And also the doctor receives his fees in advance and then disappears, but the justice of heaven had the last word, the doctor was arrested within days after because of medical negligence that caused brain atrophy for 10 years old boy.
Professionally, the period for which I worked as an internal medicine resident in a teaching public hospital and as a General Practitioner in the private sector has given me the opportunity to live for myself a lot of cases filled with uncountable number of abuses infringing one of the basic human rights which is to receive appropriate treatment for a pathological condition. Enough to say that in Egypt, any doctor whether he is in his first year or even he is the most famous surgeon in Egypt can cause directly or indirectly the death of any number of patients and then return to his home safely, and the next day we all cannot but notice the confidence of coming back again to his office as if nothing has happened. There is no form of control over the performance of the health care providers in Egypt, no one has to take responsibility for the errors committed, and this did not only lead to the loss of many lives without right, but also has led to a decline in the level of performance scientifically and practically among the health care providers. Moreover, the level of health insurance in Egypt is a disaster, and medical insurance private sector is not fair. My experience through internship, residency and working in the private sector has confirmed my desire to pursue my further studies in the field of health care system development.
By that, I can imagine that I am investing myself in the creation of a health care system that has proper standards of performance and achievements, hoping to improve health outcomes among my people especially as we are -here in Egypt- going through a new era of evolution. For that, I am enthusiastic to study the keystone principles that influence decision making and policymaking in health care system management. By effecting the XXX program at the University of YYY, I wish to take advantage of my exposure to world-class health care reform principles, and implement some of these principles to promote and improve the health of people as well as gaining the ability to adjust a modern model of health care management to fit countries in need of such reform. I am confident that contributing to health care reform in my country is actually an investment in its economic growth and development.
My goal is to be able to conduct studies that would allow me to gain detailed knowledge of how health care systems work in developed countries, and possibly study a health care system of a developing country like Egypt, and be able to develop a modular system that can adapt to the particulars of the health care system in Egypt or any other developing country. My goal after studying the XXX program is to be able to contribute to health care reform in Egypt by identifying and reviewing population needs for health care services, including assessing and appraising current services and sustaining decision making in development of these services.
I am a student with intellectual capacity, passion and obligation to excel at your program. I feel that graduate study at XXX will be the most coherent addition to my academic pursuits and a major step towards accomplishing my goals.
Once accepted, I will focus on areas related to principles of health care system development and I will work on researches discussing status of health care systems in developing countries.
After following a careful line of investigation about my future studies, I believe that the XXX program at ZZZ university would be a perfect fit with my current goal to further my education in the field of health care system development.
I hope to gain an inclusive understanding of health care policy principles as well as methods of health care research. I am confident that through XXX program at ZZZ University, I will gain comprehensive knowledge in how to construct a health policy system that has the ability to deal with challenges of implementation such a system into a developing country like Egypt. This will occur through applying the principles of health policy to a standard model like health care systems in one of the developed nations.
I picture myself in five years as a university teacher with a PhD diploma in health policy. I will transmit my understanding of health policies to students who will in turn impact the access to health to individuals in the world. Further, I see myself as a health policy officer working in the public sector (most probably in the government) participating in a health care reform project. My strong awareness of health policy principles will markedly help in building a solid experience that can serve developing nations designing efficient healthcare plan in order to touch as much population in need as possible.
I know that this is going to need alot of work, but i hope you can help me by reducing the amount of work needed to make it presentable.
Thank you so much for your efforts.
Best regards,
Mahmoud
