Hi,

I need some opinions about my SOP, I`m still not sure about it. thanks.

Statement

Having entered to the fascinating world of Visual Arts has allowed me to develop my proposal with an unexpected freedom, freedom that is becoming less random.

During my undergraduate studies I encountered and experimented with the main techniques of the Visual Arts. I began with extensive drawing sessions, continuing then with an experimental approach towards painting, where I understood the importance of the relationship between every visual element within a composition. Afterwards I incorporated the usage of the machine in my visual investigations, leaning towards photography and lithography, techniques through which I experimented with the image's composition and thorough which I developed a particular interest for objectiveness.

Hermosilla, Luis(es) (Hi 8. 9'21'' Loop. 2006) was the piece that introduced me to the video technique. In this self portrait I study and represent different people that have my same first and last name (Luis Hermosilla), proving the ineffectiveness of the name as a sign (according to Pierce) and testifying the individuality of the Luis(es). The usage of video in this piece is indispensable because it gave the necessary time for the acting and allowed the auto-certification of the existence of each of the Luis(es).

I consider of essential importance the semantic origin of the word video (Latin: first person, singular of the verb: see), because it refers to the significance of delivering an -audiovisual- opinion through every piece. I affirm that in the body of work encompassing Extranjero, La OperaciĆ³n, Franjas, Videoforma: 00290509, I -as an audiovisual creator- am the one that presents an opinion about a specific current phenomenon, being the variety of themes alluded a consequence of the liberty of the Visual Arts.

I deem that the Latin origin of the word video has become increasingly important for my work and I strongly support the idea of guiding my future audiovisual creation towards the development of documentaries. Within which the diverse addressed themes will be chosen from events occurring in my daily life, because, as an artist, my life is my source of inspiration. If I would have to define the duration and format of these, then I would say: I still do not know. I believe that the experiment in the audiovisual technique will be a determinant element in the future development of my work.

I believe that the most suitable place to accomplish all of my goals, to experiment with the video technique and to further research about the audiovisual realization is the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In the Master of Fine Arts in Film, Video and New Media program I would have access to the vast infrastructure needed to develop this technique, (how I wish to try a film camera -with that particular grain- and/or try the diverse variety of lenses and filters available for those cameras!) and complement my practical approach towards the audiovisual media with a theoretical and reflexive education, dictated by a faculty known for being strong leaders in the contemporary Art scene and characterized by a long trajectory in the field.

Besides the prestige of being part of a leading educative institution such as SAIC, Chicago as a city, provides two valuable reasons to choose the Master of Fine Arts in Film, Video and New Media Program. On the first hand Chicago is a cultural metropolis -characteristic that as an artist I thank and value-, that counts with institutions such as the Video Data Bank (where I would research the global history of Video Art) and the Gene Siskel Film Center (which constantly presents the current audiovisual tendencies, Films and authors). In this way, it is important to mention that I believe that in order to develop instructed, interesting, and up-to-date work it is essential for any creator to know the past and the present of his media.

As a second reason for my interest for studying, working and living in Chicago is that my brother is developing a PhD Program at Kellog, and he is the one who constantly invites me to visit him and to enjoy such a rich city. Being this a very important factor, since I come from a very unified family.
