Hi. Please take a took at my personal statement for a PhD research degree in nutrition. Any suggestions, comments or criticism (grammar, puncture, wording, style etc..) are welcomed! Thank you.
I have recently developed a great interest in nutrition, it has taught me to appreciate the importance of nutrition and that it has a profound effect on health and disease. One disease that I have gained much interest is in diabetes mellitus, how nutrition and lifestyle interventions can have an impact on this disease. Diabetes is global disease that currently affects millions worldwide and is increasing due to a sedentary lifestyle and the lack of knowledge of proper care. My clinical experience at the Chulalongkorn University Hospital has also enhanced my interest in nutrition and diabetes mellitus of which I have established a desire to want to educate people of proper nutrition that can improve one's quality of life.
During my final year of my undergraduate degree in Applied Chemistry I completed my senior project entitled 'Addition of omega 3 fatty acids to snack for increased nutrition value'. From my senior project not only have I developed laboratory skills but also helped me recognize my interest in the subject of nutrition. To gain further insight in the field, I continued my postgraduate degree in Applied Food and Nutrition. Being new to the field, I took time and worked hard to learn the basics of nutrition; nonetheless I enjoy the complexity of this field and feel proud to have excelled in it. Currently I am working on my thesis which focuses on developing a nutracetical extracted from the pomelo fruit that may possess great antiglycation properties. In which from my thesis I wish to create a basis of information into develop the pomelo extract into a nutraceutical food or a component of medical food that is cost effective and widely accessible to the Thai population.
During my post graduate study I also had the opportunity to attend various nutrition conferences and seminars. At these conferences and seminars I was enlighten to the many issues of the interplay between nutrition and disease and the development of nutritional approaches to diet related disease. I was also able to meet many world renowned leaders in nutrition which presented the latest research findings in nutrition. These not only broaden my academic vision but also furthered kindled my interest in nutrition.
Developing countries, like Thailand lack of widely accessible and affordable medical attention especially to diet related diseases like diabetes mellitus, thus effective nutracetical food that is cost effective and accessible may be valuable. My goals are to pursue a career in the research and development as researcher or consultant for developing different nutraceuticals that can not only provide health and medical benefits but also be free from side effects and cost effective to developing countries.
Apart from my growing interest and appreciation for nutrition and its impact on diabetes I would also like to expand my knowledge on nutrition and diabetes. I am most interested in glycation and the developing of antiglycatiom agents from dietary sources. I would like to apply for a research degree in Diabetes & Nutritional Sciences at UNIVERSITY because I believe that at UNIVERSITY being one of the most prestigious university can provide me with the knowledge and facilities that no other university can provide. The many collaborations that UNIVERSITY have with different internal and external facilities is advantageous as valuable information and resourceful research opinions can be provided. Moreover, the collaboration with the Academic Unit of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at Sheffield University can precisely aid me developing a significant research. The first-class research facilities can also provide me with means in creating momentous evidence based research. I am eager to involve myself in cutting-edge research at your university and believe that UNIVERSITY is the important key to the pursuing of my career.
