The World has entered in to the 21st century; but the challenges humans are facing has been identified ages back. There is urgency of maintaining natural resource base, the concerns for the sustainable economic development and balancing our environment. Environmental Science is a broad term, incorporating various different activities. Not only it includes the architect of ecosystem, it explains the need of efficiency in use of natural resource and the impact of new technologies. The urban consumerist crowd has certainly started to create overwhelming impact on the sustainability of our resources. I am concerned about the enormous impact on the people living in small villages; the balance that has been maintained between the life and the nature, the economic opportunity for the people in the urban slums of third world country like Nepal And to move towards the sustainable growth and protect the environment from degradation.
With a Bachelor's in Environmental Science and Master's in Natural Resource Management I expect that the Master's in Environmental Science will help me to enhance my experience, knowledge, interaction and prospect which contribute enormously to my future career plans and to help to educate communities change.
After finishing my Bachelor's Degree I got the opportunity to work in Winrock International, Nepal Agriculture Program. Winrock International is an American NGO based in Arkansas USA. I worked as a Monitoring and Evaluation Assistant for the UJYALO program three years. UJYALO program partners include the Save the Children US (Prime), The Asia Foundation (TAF), CARE Nepal and International Development Enterprise - Nepal. The goal of the UJYALO program was to promote peace through increasing the income of marginalized groups and through capacity building for peace among conflict affected communities in western Nepal. Currently I am working on the other project of Winrock International as a Monitoring and Evaluation Assistant for the Nepal Smallholder Market Initiative - Nepal (SIMI-Nepal). In both of the project my role is same. I have to collect the project's monthly progress report and other information from filed and compile it in a progress sheet and prepare a quarterly and annual report of the project. I also have to manage and conduct trainings to the project beneficiaries and projects staffs. Taking care of the environment and health of the people UJYALO income generation program and SIMI-Nepal mainly focused in production of high value crops using bio-pesticides, bio-fertilizers and micro irrigation technology.
Working on these projects I got the opportunities to know the situation of rural poor people more closely and what their basic needs are. In Nepal most of the environmental degradations are due to the growing population that needs more food and land to live. Consequently it brings the cutting down of forest trees for agricultural land. My professional experience brings me to realize that if we train people for production of high value crops quantitatively and qualitatively using bio fertilizers and bio pesticides so we can produce organic food and reduce polluting the environment from utilization of chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides used in agricultural field in large amount. Winrock International Nepal also works with the Community Forest Users Groups (CFUGs) on farming of Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP) in the Community Forest where people are encourage to plant trees and protect it from cutting down. My professional life brought me in contact with different people from the different fields working together to enhance the life of people living in rural part of the country and natural environment of Nepal.
These experiences that I have gained as a community organizer, professional, and a student in the field after years of interaction with the people from various back grounds has helped me enormously to realize my goal in life. After completing my study I want to utilize my knowledge of various principles and concepts of science and technologies, and experience to protect and preserve the environment and bring positive changes in the life of rural villagers.
