Hello Team,
I am glad to be on this platform, kindly assist me in reviewing the SOP below for my graduate school application, and if possible make a suggestion on how best I can go about some statements.
Thank you in advance.
Over the years, the oil and gas industry has seen many catastrophic and devastating accidents due to loss of containment of hazardous substances at various accident sites. Gaining mastery and in-depth knowledge on how to properly and safely manage operations and processes involving hazardous substances to prevent losses of containments and accidents that may arise from these is very crucial which caught my attention after pursing my first degree. I graduated from the XXX University of with a B.Sc. in XXX Engineering with XXX/4.00 in 20XX. During my period of study, I undertook courses like Fluid Transport, Engineering in Society, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Fire and Safety Engineering, Process Control and Instrumentation and Pollution Control in the Petrochemical Industry which opened me up to various theoretical ideas and concepts used in the oil and gas industry. It is my ambition to be a well-trained and knowledgeable Process Safety Engineer to enable me to establish an advanced career in the oil and gas industry. I am therefore applying to XXX University's M.S. in Safety Engineering program for the XXX 20XX term.
My decision to pursue M.S. Safety Engineering was not a quick decision but has been built and developed over time with continuous studies, enquiries, and field work in undergraduate school and in an oil and gas industry. This nurtured interest began in a Fire and Safety Engineering class, where the lecturer taught us and introduced us to various incidents in the oil and gas industry. We were shown a video clip of the Piper Alpha platform incident that had happened in July 1988, in the Northern North Sea which led to over 150 people losing their lives. This catastrophic event could have easily been prevented if appropriate Process Safety requirements were in place and followed. After graduating from undergraduate school, I worked as an onshore HSE Engineer Trainee at XXX at the company's Receiving Facility that receives gas from the FPSO XXX from the Offshore XXX, compresses the gas and exports it to XXX domestic pipelines. During this period, I had the opportunity of learning a lot about the company's XX Process Safety Fundamentals, attended meetings, carried out presentations, and introduced the company's new handbook called XXX Process Safety Fundamentals, a small handbook for immediate referencing while on the job to the entire workforce at the XXX Receiving Facility as I had become abreast with those fundamentals. The handbook contained guidelines and principles related to onsite operations involving hazardous operations to prevent losses of containment. I led a group of plant operators in performing pre-shutdown and pre-startup safety inspections on valves and other equipment before shutdown and startup activities respectively and assisted the HSE Superintendent in carrying out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for site activities. I also undertook the 20XX NEBOSH International General Certificate where I learned a lot about Safe Systems of Operations. I learned more on the importance of Process Safety in oil and gas operations and my interest has since aligned with this career path that I want to pursue M.S. in Safety Engineering at XXX University to become an established Process Safety Engineer.
During my undergraduate degree at the XXX, I was elected the President of my program's association, the Association of XXX Students, taking into consideration my leadership qualities, communication skills and performance, I organized academic seminars, webinars, and various technical events to bridge the gap between the class and the industry as we were usually taken through theoretical lectures and trainings and lacked the technical know-how of what we were studying. During the final year of my undergraduate degree, I undertook two projects; Plant design to produce ammonia using Isopentane from XXXX Gas Company as the main raw material, and Design of an ammonia synthesis reactor to produce ammonia. The first project which was the main project was focused on the design of an Ammonia production plant using Isopentane, an effluent from XXX Gas Company, repurposed as a valuable raw material for ammonia production, preventing harmful environmental releases from the flaring of the Isopentane by XXXl Gas Company. The plant processes involved four main stages which includes membrane nitrogen generation, catalytic steam reforming, synthesis gas purification, and an ammonia synthesis loop. The project demonstrated the importance of integrating environmental protection with Chemical Engineering by minimizing flaring of effluent and maximizing resource value. In the design of the ammonia synthesis reactor, I selected a three-bed radial flow converter due to its low pressure drop and efficient heat management and I applied key engineering principles to optimize both safety and efficiency. This project deepened my understanding and gave me a solid foundation in process design, pressure control, and heat transfer in industrial processes and I am eager to expand my knowledge in areas like Safety Systems Design and Integration, Effective Hazard Mitigation, and Advanced Process Optimization as I pursue Master of Science in Safety Engineering at XXX University.
I find your esteemed institution with its great and renowned research institutions as the ideal place for my graduate studies. The XXX Process Safety Center opens students up to lot of information and opportunities to undertake various groundbreaking research projects. Symposiums, workshops, and conferences held by the center enhances knowledge sharing and networking among Process Safety professionals. The center's enthusiasm to continuously promote a culture of safety in industries that handle hazardous materials and processes through research develops my interest in pursuing my graduate degree at XXX University. The various scholarship opportunities for students pursuing Safety Engineering at the University and the low cost of living at XXX state pushes me enough to settle for your esteemed institution. XXX boasts of excellent living conditions for a diverse range of backgrounds, cost of living, housing, and necessities are averagely lower than the national average which will make my stay and life in graduate school more comforting. XXX University seeks to improve the lives of people through forward-thinking education, life-enhancing studies and scholarship, and selfless service and I wish to pursue my graduate degree in your esteemed institution. My main objective in pursuing a graduate degree in Safety Engineering is to acquire in-depth knowledge in Process Safety Management and Occupational Health and Safety to pursue a role where I can employ my acquired and extensive knowledge and experience to improve the overall safety of the working force of many organizations to ensure personnel carrying out their duties at the workplace to ensure the betterment of our world safely return to their families without having to add them up as injury statistics.
After careful study, I have developed keen interest in research work conducted by Professor XXX as his research group focuses on continuous and advanced risk management, process safety management, and environment system modeling and management and his experience in the Health Safety and Environment sector and I believe being part of his research group will enable me to contribute and acquire in-depth knowledge I need to make actualize my goals and objectives.
It would be a dream come true and a great privilege to be able to pursue my graduate degree at XXX University and I am very confident I will meet your institution's high standards.
Thank you for reaching a favorable decision on my application and I look forward to hearing from you.
