Graduate / "White Opulence"; My passion for literary creation and analysis. KGSP Self -Introduction [2]

Hello this is what I've written so far in my self-introduction, please let me know if I'm heading at the right direction on this. I'm well-aware that what I put out here is wordy and there are details that I can shorten or eliminate.

KGSP Self -Introduction

o Your course of life, your view of life, study background, your hopes & wishes, etc
o Your education and work experience, etc., in relation to the KGSP program
o Your motivations for applying for this program
o Reason for study in Korea

Two years ago, I wrote a poem entitled "White Opulence". This specific poem I have written was my way of expressing a poetic narrative of the subject I know best, myself. Literature is fueled by experiences, and this poem was my way of encapsulating how I saw the world and how I fit in it. Experiences are grounded in significant realizations, and I believe that literature magnifies these different aspects of human realness. My passion for literary creation and analysis for this reason has been amplified. I admired the honest art that literature exhibits. With this, English Literature is a field I wanted to involve myself and mature in to a full extent.

Being a Jesuit bred student from the Ateneo de Davao University has molded me into a student who exists not only in a lecture setting, but as a person who promotes its ideals such as leadership, cultural sensitivity and transformation. In my first year of college, I was already set on developing myself as someone whose service is dedicated to the student body. As one of the chairpersons in our college's executive council (First Year Student Executive Council), I contributed and consulted my fellow batch mates in all of their necessary adjustments and needs. Despite being in the same year as them, I found that being the person who needs to step up regardless of being in the same situation as them is a good opportunity to use our similar experiences as a way of ____??

In my four year college course, studying the significance of culture, race, class, and gender and how it is incorporated in texts was fascinating for me as a literature student. Taking in the lectures I absorbed during my semester of Literary Theory, it was then I decided to pursue a study on the body of literature created by two female authors, one foreign, Sylvia Plath and one local, Lilia Lopez-Chua. My objective was to analyze the personas they set out in their poetry. The hard work I put out in this research was pivotal for me academically and personally because it was my brave decision to execute this research alone; I had a personal ambition I wanted to reflect on my work. One of my panelists in my bachelor's thesis was Dr. Macario Tiu, a renowned writer in my city, whose objective criticism was one I took greatly. His emphasis on highlighting culture and individuality made my research well-rounded, earning it a recognition for the 2nd Place for Best Thesis Infographic a month before my 2016 graduation.

Cultural transformation and sensitivity as I have aforementioned is one of the ideals I continue to exhibit as a student coming from a Jesuit school. For as long as I can remember, I saw the Ateneo continuously furthering their global horizon. Davao City became a hot spot for intercultural exchange and foreign study. During the course of my study in the Ateneo, I have built a casual network of friends from Korea. Their anecdotes of their home country are snippets I held close onto. Their open-mindedness and willingness to study here inspired me to be familiar with their, culture, language, and their literature all at once. Immediately after my graduation last year, I could not pass down the opportunity of working with a Korean academy in my city. Catering to homestay and short term students (summer/winter) students who are studying and learning English, and seeing that I had enough exposure to my field and dealing with Korean people (I don't know how to express this part without sounding pushy that I have Korean friends), I saw myself growing in that environment...

Writing Feedback / Some people claim that the goal of politics should be the pursuit of an ideal. Others argue ... [4]

@paras01

The issues I see that needs tweaking are grammatical errors. Take note that you need to observe proper parallelism in your sentences. Also the excessive use of commas are present here. Tempting as it may to put pauses within sentences, it would be easier to shorten or fuse the idea in one sentence to be more straightforward in your point.

Examples:

Policy alleviates the elementary problems of society as it is necessary to be implemented for the striving of nations.

Quixotic goal, unlike real goal, are appealing ...

Amongst other goals, the Quixotic is appealing when politicians give speeches about it. Their goal seems grandiose but is rarely achieved because it is....

Graduate / The Korean Millennial's View of Young Adult Literature. Study Plan Proposal Title [4]

progressive mindset of Koreans

Hello for my KGSP Study Plan, I came up with a thesis title that would serve as a writing prompt for me to further elaborate in.

Title: The Korean Millennial's View of Young Adult Literature

Do you think this is an appealing topic? Is the topic too broad or narrow?

I intend to push through with this research because I think by studying how Koreans view Young Adult Literature would give us some perspective on how progressive their mindset is in the 21st century. There are themes found in modern YA that revolves around themes such as gender, sexuality, culture, or political stand, to name a few.

Also please give me suggestions on the outcomes you would like to see in a study like this. Thank you so much!

Graduate / The Korean Millennial's View of Young Adult Literature. Study Plan Proposal Title [4]

@Holt

Thank you for the response. I think my discussion on whether I would choose American YA or Korean YA would be revealed in my Scope and Limitations in my thesis. Would it be a risk if I reveal in my essay that during my stay there, hypothetically speaking, I would invest my time on reading and delving myself more on Korean YA? I think being in a Korean environment would give me that full immersion as a researcher. I think it would be interesting too to include a bit of comparative analysis on Korean YA and American YA.

Undergraduate / Describe a character on a TV show or a book that you most identify with and why [4]

At age 6, Zach X was lost [...] were at different amusement parks.

I think in this paragraph you fell short on furthering your anecdote. It was an enjoyable read but it would be even more so if you elaborate your personal experience. In that way readers like me could sympathize with the two personas all at once.

Graduate / Korea; developing myself in the country's culture and language. KGSP Study Plan Draft [3]

Hello this is my draft for my Study Plan. Please let me know if there's anything missing in this.

research on The Korean Millennial's

Before my decision of pursuing a Master's degree in English Literature in Korea, I was already set on developing myself in the country's culture and language. I gradually picked up on relevant textbooks that would guide a Korean language beginner like me as way to grasp a basic, but significantly helpful speaking and writing points. I will continue to do so in the one-year training program. I find that collecting resources would be advantageous in the long run.

If there is a research I would like to contribute in the current body of study in the English Literature program in Korea, I believe that furthering the study of how the Korean society, specifically the millennials, very forward thinking would give me, my future panelists and future researchers a perspective of their mindset in the 21st century, in the lens of literature. My proposed study entitled "The Korean Millennial's View of Young Adult Literature" would show just that. I found that there is little discussion concerning how this unique set of subjects react to Young Adult Literature, when YA in itself is influential in a way that it serves as a mirror for recurring themes of everyday realities presented in numerous novels. As a person who is also part of this maturing generation, I want this study to be a compilation of realizations and challenges faced by us.

The purpose of this study is to make a detailed narrative of the responses towards how accurately millennial personas or themes are portrayed in young adult novels. My qualitative research would then discuss the taboo subjects, complexities, or issues found in the novels that are uniquely Korean. It would also be interesting to bring in to the frame of my study the development of Korean young adult novels in comparison with their American/English counterparts. In this way, I would be able to pinpoint themes that Korean millennials could easily distinguish or relate to.

This study's theoretical framework will be anchored on Wolfgang Iser's Reader-Response Theory. Iser's theory is fit for my study because this particular theory asserts that instead of giving passive interpretation to the text, Iser stresses what the text does to the reader. This theory will be helpful to build up my narrative on how reader participation is crucial. The outcome that I expect would be if Young Adult Literature has some level of effect towards Korean millennials, then this would simultaneously reveal something about them. My use of Young Adult literature, therefore, will be the driving tool to locate and perhaps address a Korean millennial's disposition and desires in the modern and ever-changing world they live in. I believe that the outcome of my research will challenge Korea's perception on millennials.

During the course of my three year study, I will review all the necessary readings needed to supplement this study. I intend to acquire materials such as the young adult novels to gradually begin my analysis on them. Upon research, I found five Korean YA novels that would substantiate my research namely: The Vegetarian by Han Kang, The Interpreter by Suki Kim, Drifting House by Krys Lee, Please Look After My Mom by Kyung-sook Shin, and Fox Girl by Nora Okja Keller. The various stories presented in this novel will set my scope and limitations for my study, which I would eventually find out in the course of my readings.

Finally, what pushed me to pursue this study plan in Sogang University is the English Literature program they set out. Their areas of specialization would enrich my research would be the lectures under English Literature, Culture Studies, American Cultural Studies, and Literary Theory and Criticism. Furthermore, executing this research in Korea is an opportunity for me to be in full immersion with my goal and subject of research.
