I could never fathom why, at the tender age of seven, I was fascinated - mesmerized even - by the built atmosphere. I would wander the streets of my neighbourhood, transfixed by the rainbow hues, marvel at the varied roof pitches, the plethora of windows, the cluster of greenery that scattered the front yard; all the while imagining what transpired beyond the welcoming front door. I would conjure stories of the families that lived there, ponder on their daily activities and question whether or not their beautiful houses functioned to their needs, and if not, how can I change that? Little did I know that, at the tender age of seven, I was a budding Architect.
During high school, though my academics focused on Sciences, my passion for Architecture never dwindled. As such, after Secondary school I pursued courses including Caribbean Examination Council's Technical Drawing, Autodesk Authorized AutoCAD 2008 Levels One to Three along with AutoCAD Architectural Desktop 2008. These certifications allowed me to secure an Architectural Technician position at MoCAD Limited - a premier Architectural firm that specializes in high-end residential homes, small commercial buildings and renovations. MoCAD has provided me with gainful hands on experience in all areas of design and construction. Being able to closely interact with clients, collaborate with suppliers and contractors and experiment with design are just some of the advantages afforded to me. Additionally working in cohesion with the Interior Design department truly depicts what an integral role Interior Design plays in the Architectural process. Hence I have also heavily sponged from the creativity, pizzazz and exploration alive in this medium of design.
I have also learnt a great deal from various other activities. As a music lover, I am a member and Tenor Section Leader of Southern Marines Steelband Foundation. Being actively involved with the national instrument has taught me discipline, diligence and the importance of proper preparation. Over the last twelve years, my position in the club has also presented multiple opportunities of both leadership and team work. The celebration of success, endurance in the face of failure, the pride and confidence of always putting your best foot forward are values embedded into any Southern Marine's player. Resultantly, l have taken all these lessons and channeled them into my true devotion: Architecture.
I read somewhere that Architecture only occurs when function marries beauty, for a beautiful piece that is poorly designed and ergonomically impaired is but simply visual art. Architecture considers certain aspects: uses and practicality, efficiency, affordability and durability, all without sacrificing visual appeal. An Architect's purpose is to find the balance in these aspects and harvest it into design. I want to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Architecture, specifically at Savannah College of Art and Design, because I believe it is the perfect institution to teach me how to maintain the balance required for becoming a renowned architect. Savannah not only provides its students with a strong design foundation but also possesses an environment tailored for the creative mind. Being a specialized university students are centered on design in an innovative, technologically advanced, non-conforming fashion. Furthermore, through research, I am aware that the Architectural faculty comprises of individuals that are practical contributors to the field which is a paramount incentive for any aspiring student.
Conclusively, it is my greatest passion to become an architect - to practice what I have fantasized about since childhood - and Savannah College of Art and Design is the vehicle through which my dreams shall become reality.
