Scholarship / My rotation at the antenatal care unit - Chevening scholarship on Leadership [NEW]

CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY

Please this is my draft for the leadership and influence. @Holt, could you please review it for me. Suggestions to improve it. Whether to use both instances or use one. I will really appreciate if you could assist me. Thank you

1. PROFESSIONAL

A major public health challenge research on XXXXXXXX, which I am the team leader, is ongoing at the XXXXXXX because of the initiative I took as an intern November last year during my rotation at the antenatal care unit. I realized the scarcity of research on XXXXXX after been given a rough estimate that an average of 4 pregnant women died during labour every month yet without any substantive evidence. My previous year experience in research spurred me to carry out this research to contribute to knowledge in the facility, inform stakeholders and policy makers to implement strategies to reduce the maternal deaths to the barest minimum.

I informed and inspired my colleague research assistants to form a research team to investigate the situation. I wrote a proposal and sought the necessary consent from the appropriate bodies until this project was finally approved. As the team leader, I assigned tasks and part of my duties were to review XXXXX of maternal outcomes in the past 2 years. I found that 8 in every 100 patients died after delivery because of excessive bleeding and that was mainly due to late access to safe blood or blood products and previous history of bleeding disorders. This was a serious health challenge that needed immediate clinical attention. I met with the team, we deliberated on the finding, and I was able to resolve all conflicting issues on the inferences and recommendations raised until we all came to a consensus. On behalf of my team, I presented the findings to the lab in-charge, and suggested recommendations to improve the outcome. He took it up to the medical board and the team subsequently reached the stake holders and policy makers to implement effective strategies.

Consequently, a periodic 3 months blood donation and free screening exercise for university students with partner NGO bodies including.............. has been initiated. The facility now has enough blood to store for emergency transfusion situations and also to donate to neighbour hospitals due to its short half-life. Maternal mortality due to excessive bleeding has dropped from the estimated average 4 to 1 per month, representing a 75% reduction. Bleeding disorders has now also been included as part of their routine examinations to prevent high risk individuals from excessive bleeding after labour.

This has been a trailblazer in the facility and I currently lead a team to follow up women from the time of pregnancy to delivery to monitor the outcome of delivery and associated risks for maternal mortality.

One essay at a time.

Student Talk / Length requirements for CV and any suggestions about how to make it successful. [6]

Length requirements for your CV depends on the university you are applying to. Some will give you specific requirements, like max. 2 pages and so forth. So you need to check the application requirement for each university you are applying to. If it is not given, then you can use your own discretion but also bear in mind not to make it too long. You can have a very long CV, but to each application, you can trim it to meet the requirements of that particular program you are applying for.

On the suggestions to make it successful, make sure to highlight in detail what you have done so far and read online templates, you can as well watch videos of how successful applicants wrote theirs.

Student Talk / How to make academic writing interesting? [13]

In my own opinion, its quite difficult to start writing an academic paper if you really don't have interest in it. One way to be interested in it to be consistent in writing it.

Set small writing goals, take enough breaks and then you find it interesting as time goes on.

Quitting because of boredom will mean you cannot have interest in it.

I hope this helps

Scholarship / Skills and knowledge gained from study by an individual aspiring to become a healthcare professional [3]

First of all, my first choice program is the University of ...

You will need to reconstruct this well. You talked about program and then you mentioned university rather.

Try and make the reasons why you want to study at those universities more personal rather than just general reasons. It doesn't make your essay compelling enough.

Also, try replacing the I aim to gain with other phrases. It makes reading quite boring.

Research Papers / The use of social media and effects on individuals' mental health [3]

Your discussion has been well organized and there is also much clarity.
However, to thoroughly discuss this, you will need to provide additional references, at least 2 to substantiate your claims. Yes the systematic review also looks good to buttress your point. But try and add more references.

Also, you can argue this better if you could provide contrasting findings so that we can see both sides of the story.

Scholarship / Leveraging my networking skills to impact the health sectors - Chevening Networking Essay [NEW]

Hello Everyone, please this is my draft for the

Chevening networking essay

. All suggestions are humbly welcome.

I am XXXX, an enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist who understands the significance of cultivating strong professional relationships. In my pursuit of excellence, I recognize the role these connections play in shaping and influencing the field of biomedical science. As I aspire to be part of the Chevening community, I am committed to leveraging my networking skills to contribute positively to the health and research sectors.

As a research assistant at the Department of XXXXX, I have consistently pursued collaborative opportunities to foster meaningful connections. I believe in the power of teamwork and have actively engaged with colleagues, supervisors, and industry professionals who share my dedication to advancing medical research and diagnostics.

In my role at the department last year November, I was entrusted with overseeing a critical research project aimed at enhancing the accuracy of diagnostic assays. This endeavour not only demanded scientific rigor but also necessitated interdisciplinary cooperation to ensure its successful implementation. Recognizing the significance of building bridges beyond my immediate department, I proactively sought out networking opportunities. I took the opportunity to attend a hospital-wide symposium on advancements in medical diagnostics, during which I found myself seated at a table with the Quality Control Manager, Medical Director and CEO of XXXX Hospital. Seizing the chance to share insights from my research, I engaged in a lively discussion about the potential implications of my findings for clinical practice. The Quality Control Manager, impressed by the meticulousness of my approach, expressed interest in collaborating to streamline diagnostic procedures. This initial connection led to a series of follow-up discussions, where we brainstormed innovative solutions to expedite quality assurance processes while maintaining diagnostic accuracy. I established a rapport and recently partnered with the hospital to engage in a free screening exercise for my community.

My dedication to networking extends beyond my workplace. At the XXXXX research week conference, I presented my research findings, which captivated experts from diverse fields. The presentation ignited meaningful discussions that transcended geographical boundaries. As we explored intersections between our interests, I found myself aligned with professionals from the XXX and XXXXXX, reflecting a shared vision for advancing medical diagnostics. Through subsequent meetings and discussions, we uncovered innovative pathways that bridge gaps in medical research. The result was a joint study that not only deepened our understanding of XXXXX but also unearthed novel applications in XXXXXXX. The synergy between our expertise led to a groundbreaking publication that received recognition within the research community. This cross-continental collaboration underscores the transformative potential of networking in driving impactful change.

Looking ahead, I am resolute in my goal to harness my professional relationship-building skills to drive progress in biomedical science. As I embark on my Chevening Scholarship journey, I am fueled by the ambition to build even stronger networks in the realm of biomedical science and also to share my professional network with the Chevening community. I recognize that collaborating with individuals from diverse backgrounds will not only enrich my research but also provide fresh perspectives on tackling complex challenges.

Furthermore, my goal is to address the existing gaps in biomedical research. I aspire to forge partnerships that transcend geographical boundaries, allowing me to tap into the expertise of scholars and professionals worldwide. By leveraging the Chevening network, I am confident that I can access resources and collaborations that will enable me to contribute significantly to bridging these gaps and advancing the frontiers of biomedical science.
