What about Columbia appeals to you most and why?

As I crossed Columbia's gates, I felt as though I had entered a portal to an old-world town of a bygone era; the cacophony and abrasiveness of the city streets were instantly replaced by a pleasant quiet and picturesque air. But most exciting, as I talked with a few students, I saw curious and enthusiastic people, much like me, who loved learning. The distinct urban culture was unmistakable; youth were gathered on library steps, while multitudes roamed about the open plaza. The entire campus suddenly seemed like a grand market exchange, with perpetual transaction of meaningful ideas and witty banter. Immediately, I felt at home; I yearned to be part of this unparalleled experience. But while Columbia's atmosphere was certainly enticing, its academics also seemed thoroughly satisfying. Columbia's apparent pairing of the liberal arts with other fields of study epitomizes the well-rounded and intellectually stimulating education I desire. It also presents, what I believe, is a singular opportunity for peers to develop a close bond as they share perspectives and work on the same tasks together. Uncommon as impressive to me was the inclusion of oral debate and extensive inquiry in small, discussion-based classes. As someone who loves asking questions, speaking aloud, and reflecting on even the tiniest of things, such a program is perfect for me! Essentially, while many colleges offer sterling reputations and a myriad of resources, Columbia is simply more tailored to my pursuits!

Throughout my life, books have not only been my mediums of solace, but also my greatest mentors. My favorite novels led me to question societal constructs, embrace the metaphysical, and dabble in the unfathomable. However, few novels were enlightening as Isabel Allende's "The House of The Spirits." Set in the Pinochet era, the Latin-American melodrama shares the riveting vicissitudes of the endearing Trueba family. It begins as a light-hearted, eccentric family chronicle growing somber as characters are enveloped in the socialist coup'd'ĂŠtat. In the book, concepts such as the duality of life and death are explored, as well as memory and time. But what makes the work so powerful to me is its portrayal of devastation from an ostensibly harmless human feeling - hatred. Boldly and shamelessly, Allende demonstrates the depravity of man, fruitlessness of revenge, and power of love. At first, I loathed Esteban for his rapes of innocent girls and poor treatment of his workers. Yet through his storytelling, as I learned of his compassion towards his granddaughter Alba and love for Rosa and Clara, I was touched. By the book's end, he is reduced to a whimpering, old man staring death in the face and regretting his sins. Can we forgive his vile acts? And if not, will we allow this curse of hate to fester for all eternity? The House of The Spirits has reminded me of not judging a book by its cover, of giving others a chance, and most importantly, that animosity can only bring harm.

I am something of a dichotomy. I am at first glance, the fiery and ambitious aspiring lawyer. My passion for debate, fascination with ethics and philosophy, and appreciation of our laws specifically, suggest a world of torts, high profile cases, and vigorous court battles is where I belong.

Yet, despite this, I am conflicted, for I am also the curious, whimsical, and quixotic dreamer. I simply wish to maximize my happiness and unfetter my soul from the chains of responsibilities and expectations in this world. Nothing appeals to me more than writing lurid prose, immersing myself in classic works of literature, and pursuing greater knowledge. A major in English would allow me to do all this, but may not possess all the prestige of the legal profession.

I used to wonder whether the practical or academic path would ultimately benefit me greater. While both are of tantamount importance, I decided that I have time to develop my interests and have not yet fully committed myself to the world of law. Thus, English would allow me to strengthen my rhetorical background, enhance my critical thinking, and improve my argumentative skills while doing something I love if I ever again decide to pursue law.
