Scholarship / "Networking with an open mind" Business networking is important in my everyday job. [5]

@Holt
Hi Mary,

Thanks for your feedback, I will revise accordingly. I'm just curious why you have been so enthusiastic about the students on this forum, you have been using a lot of your time on reading and answering questions not only for grammar but also the structure and content of essays. What's the motivation behind you that keep you up for this? I thought of sending you a private message but I don't find this function here, just want to say I really appreciate your help.

NETWORKING SKILLS FOR CHEVENING

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong networking skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your networking skills, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future.

(minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words)

Business networking is important in my everyday job. As the media contact point in my current and previous organizations, one of my duties is to acquire and maintain relationships with journalists. It is not said on the job description, but having a good relationship with reporters in the Finance sector makes me able to invite press to interview my company's spokesperson, cover stories and publish press releases.

During my two year tenure in XXX, I have represented the Hong Kong office to attend all kind of events in Langkawi, Bali, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, including award presentation ceremonies and regional sports tournaments. I am an open minded and sociable person that my social skills are recognized by management. I was nominated to represent HK to attend a regional bowling tournament despite the fact that I haven't played bowling since high school. The reason is management trust I can represent HK office well as one of the purposes of the event is relationship building among different offices. I did not let them down and managed to mingle and make new acquaintances from other countries.

During my university study, I joined Cultural Diversity Ambassador Programme as one of the 29 ambassadors from 15 nations in HKU to promote respect and embrace cultural diversity among different nationalities. We together organized an Opening ceremony of "Respect, See it again" exhibition at HKU and performed an African fashion show with an original song performance.

We local student ambassadors have brought international and mainland students to different interesting places in HK, such as the wet market, public housing estate, refugee foundation and other small shops and restaurants. We exchanged ideas and learned how to appreciate the differences among us. It is a memorable experience to me because an ordinary thing to us can be a treasure to others. Until now, I still keep contact with some of the international friends I made during that time, this friendship will be life-long.

I also participated the Cultural Mentorship Programme and joined HKU alumni Association. I cherish the bonding and the time we spend together and would like to give my two cents to my younger fellows.

I started travelling on my own to other Asian countries a few years ago and volunteered in Taiwan, Cambodia and Thailand during my trips. I made with locals no matter they are the travel agents or other volunteers in the NGO. Most of the time I stayed in a hostel and enjoyed chatting with strangers like a long-lost friend. The people and conversation exchanged, instead of the landscape or tourist attractions, is the thing that you always look back after the trip.

My purpose of applying Chevening award is much more than getting the funding. The opportunity to know and learn from other Chevening scholars, the experience to attend Chevening alumni activities and being part of the Chevening network are the unmeasurable privileges. I believe a group of like-minded people with diverse specialties but sharing the same dream can be very powerful.

Scholarship / STUDYING IN THE UK - Chevening: motivations to make marketing sustainable [3]

@Holt
Thanks a lot for your valuable feedbacks, I've revised accordingly:

Over the past 5 years I have been working in the marketing field and witnessed that the focus and emphasis have been switching to the digital side as the return-on-investment of digital marketing is more measurable than traditional marketing. As a result, organizations and management became shortsighted and have a higher tendency than ever to demand immediate results and performance but leave other aspects behind. Even if organisations agree that sustainability is important to all their stakeholders, concerns remain about how to market according to sustainable principles.

I have an undergraduate degree with a major in Marketing and minor in Sociology. I always like to think intellectually about the world and enjoy being challenged. Therefore, I think marketing tools can be more powerful than making profit for the company. Marketing should indeed serve as a bridge between corporate responsibility and profitability. Sustainable marketing is a new concept in marketing and business that especially in Hong Kong, no any master course in this specific area is launched so far. I believe learning with peers from all over the world in a renowned institution will enhance my competence to work in multinational companies. Below are my choices of three master's programmes:

1.) Heriot-Watt University: International Marketing Management with Sustainability (MSc)

Sustainable marketing initiatives often require a significant capital investment to change the way a company does business or to innovate its products and services so they have a more positive impact on the environment. I wish to acquire the knowledge and skills to lead on sustainable and socially responsible marketing throughout this programme. More importantly, besides academic knowledge and understanding, industry insights and experiences can be also provided by the teaching team comprised of internationally well-known industry expertise and renowned academics.

2.) University of Brighton: Marketing (Social Marketing) (MSc)

This course has a common goal with mine: plan programmes to influence and ultimately change behaviours of target audience. After completing the programme, I will be able to apply techniques and concepts to promote behavioural changes for the benefit of individuals and society, such as improved diets and healthier lifestyles.

3.) Royal Holloway, University of London: Consumption, Culture and Marketing (MA)

I'm always curious about the society and business at the same time so I was very excited when I discovered this distinctive interdisciplinary masters programme that draws together content from both marketing and sociology. This course will engage in a number of theoretical areas theoretical areas: branding, marketing, bio-power and neoliberalism. I will gain insights from analysing marketing behaviour and consumption practices and critically explore the experiences within the consumer society.

I wish to make use of marketing techniques I learned to improve individual and societal wellbeing. If I continue to work in the financial sector, I can design and implement marketing campaigns that are beneficial to the society. Moreover, spread the message and idea of sustainable marketing to colleagues, management and other stakeholders of the organization and make long term changes.
