2. Networking Questions: Chevening is looking for individuals with strong networking skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your networking skills, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future.

As a result of my nearly seven years of experience in the legal profession, I have accumulated a plethora of business contacts from across a range of industries, including many leaders of commerce outside [country].

My work at [name of firm], widely considered to be the best law firm in [country], put me in contact with several luminaries in the field, many of whom I was privileged to work alongside. Since the firm facilitates a wide variety of clients, I was also exposed to an array of legal fields and to individuals involved in various business interests, increasing my network of contacts to include areas such as telecommunications, the energy sector, aviation and banking.

The telecommunications industry, in particular, is one I am exceptionally familiar with due to the five years I spent at the [government body], putting me in contact with government officials, representatives from the Ministry of Communication and other respected public figures in [country]. In the pursuit of my aforementioned reforms to the Telecommunication Act, I was also required to interface with other departments at the agency. My position on the Tender Approval Committee positioned me as the focal point between the various external contractors seeking a government contract and the agency's approval committee, all of which serve as examples of my ability to communicate effectively both within the organisation and beyond it.

My brief stint at Bank [name] expanded my network to include those involved in the finance sector, and I will soon be moving to [name of company], tasked with establishing the firm's legal department. I aim to mobilise the network of personal and professional contacts I've fostered over the years to aid me in this mission and, as we expand the department in the future, to also mine my legal contacts for other lawyers of a high calibre. I then plan to repeat this exercise at a larger scale, in helping set up my own law firm in the future.

1. Leadership and Influencing skills: Chevening is looking for individuals that will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.

Chevenning Scholarship Essay for Master's in Law

Throughout my professional career, I have striven to take the initiative in improving my department/firm. During my time at the [governemnt body], I found several inconsistencies and gaps in the Telecommunications Act and while working as a Legal Specialist there, I took it upon myself, without being prompted to by my bosses, to address the issues. The Act's lack of comprehensiveness was causing multiple departments various problems in the implementation of their duties and the project required me to compile a list of the complaints from each department and then assess the possible amendments to the law which could help resolve them.

I, then, had to secure approvals for these amendments to the Telecommunications Act from the Board of Directions of the [government body] and the Ministry of Communication in order for them to be implemented. Not only was I successful but I was also able to suggest and effectively implement similar amendments in other parts of the organisation.

Another part of my responsibilities at the [government body] was to consider tender evaluations from external contractors and inconsistencies in the internal regulations regarding such evaluations were also causing issues for my team. I was able to secure more efficient protocols in this aspect of my job as well.

I was fortunate enough to have direct leadership experience while working at a private law firm - [name of first firm] - where I was responsible for the training of junior associates. Soon, my resume will also show me as being in charge of leading and establishing the legal department at [name of second firm]. In the future, I plan on applying to the national CEO programme in [country], which is designed to train young individuals who have ambitions of becoming future leaders in the country, with the eventual goal of establishing my own law firm at some point in the future.

I believe that an important part of any leader's responsibilities is to work not just toward the betterment of their own selves or their company but also society at large. I plan on doing my part in this regard by working on fostering [country's] innovation and removing some of the legal hurdles young [countrymen] may find on their path to success.
