Book Reports / Essay on Jane Eyre and Bronte's view on religion [3]

Hey, i am writing an analytical essay on Jane Eyre and how Bronte sees religion and how she expresses her view in the book.

Here is my thesis/intro paragraph, and i would like some assistance on the succinctness of the thesis and if its meaning is apparent.

In Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, there exist many dominant themes, specifically religion. Throughout the novel, Bronte explores Christianity and its affect on humans in Victorian England. The Story provokes reflection pertaining to Christianity by the authors numerous and varying references. Bronte Exhibits, through Jane's experiences with the characters of Brocklehurst, Helen and St. John her rejection of the conventional Christian religion, yet through herself she finds her own connection to God.

Undergraduate / Bullying - Essay about an unfair situation [3]

Hey, good start, I like it very interesting and meaningful story.

I assume this is a essay for an application, if it is then you may want to add how the school changed, and personally how you changed along with your school, or if you did anything in your school to stop bullying. Also if you had any excursions with bullying you could mention that and expound on it.

The essay is well written, however, you may want to vary your language, look over your essay and see if you use the same word twice, if you do try to think of a different word, there are too many words to always use the same ones.

Book Reports / Essay on Invisble Man [4]

ok thanks here is what i have so far.

The meaning of the title of Ralph Ellison's novel, Invisible Man, becomes more apparent as the book progresses. The nameless protagonist ventures through many obstacles, which all yield the same result; he cannot be seen for who he truly is. In the early stages of the novel the narrator cannot be seen because he so readily conforms to others, thus blending into society. However, Ellison through characterization, metaphor and _______ manifests how invisibility is generated by the clouded eyes of others upon him, portraying his own ideology about the perception of African Americans in culture.

The symbolic rebirth of the narrator creates a new meaning for his invisibility; he is illustrated as deeply upset, for his tabula rasa has been tarnished by his external appearance. "Who was Buckeye the rabbit? I was filled with turmoil. Why should he think of that? He pointed to the question, word by word. I laughed, deep, deep inside me, giddy with the delight of self-discovery and the desire to hide it." (241) Ellison characterizes the narrator as resentful due to the doctor's judgment of him, which is established by his race's folklore not his personality. The doctor's vision of the narrator is his first true confirmation he is intrinsically invisible to others. Ellison reveals the narrator's happiness in this discovery; the fact that he has come to this conclusion individually helps him to succeed from the control of others. The contrasting juxtaposition of turmoil and delight confirms the narrator's sudden realization of his new invisibility.

thanks

Book Reports / Essay on Invisble Man [4]

Here is my thesis thus far, just wondering if it flows or makes sense, I must write on why Ellison chose the title he did and why it is significant.

Thanks for help or suggestions.

As Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man progresses the meaning of the title becomes more apparent. The nameless protagonist ventures through many obstacles, which all yield the same result; he cannot be seen for who he truly is. Ellison through _____, ________ and _______ validates his title by slowly, throughout the book, unfolding its true meaning, to portray his own ideology of how African Americans are viewed by all others.

Writing Feedback / The United States of America - History Essay (first paragraph) [4]

I don't think it is the history that has come a long way... it is the nation as a whole. So maybe change that.

The United states has etched itself in history by drastically and rapidly evolving as a nation... something like that.

Shaped the country into what it is today.

Is the essay about challenges that the US had to deal with, thus shaping their nation, or is it just about significant events. You might try to keep them the same either change challenges or significant events just to make it a little clearer.

The most important (being)...organizer... just condenses it slightly

Its a good concise and clear intro, try combining the last two sentences to make your thesis, and before that add a little meat, perhaps a more grasping intro.

Book Reports / Picture of Dorian Gray literary essay; Dorian's Internal Suicide [5]

I am looking for some feedback/help on my essay on Wilde's work. The prompt I must use is describing how a scene where death occurs illuminates the characters and the meaning of the work as a whole.

Dorian's Internal Suicide

Death is frequently used in literature to illuminate the true nature of the characters and the work as a whole. Oscar Wilde, in The Picture of Dorian Gray, creates the character of Dorian, a youthful boy infatuated by a corrupt older man's ideas. Wilde through the use of metaphor, symbolism and personification exhibits how Dorian's intrinsic death is a result of murdering Basil Hallward, therefore foreshadowing the end of the book.

Dorian's flawless physical appearance masks his internal non-existence. Wilde renders Basil's appearance as a dead man, who externally resembles a living entity "The thing was still seated in the chair, straining over the table with a bowed head and humped back and long fantastic arms, had it not been for the red jagged tear in the neck, and the clotted black pool that was slowly widening... one would have said he was simply asleep" (116). Basil is depicted in death as continuing to sit in his chair; this phrase is a metaphor for continuing to appear alive whilst death has been met. The extraordinary arms portray how even in death, physical form can be splendid. This parallels Dorian's being, for he is physically unmarred, yet within him festers death. The death of Basil at the hands of Dorian parades irony, for Basil is the only bridge upon which Dorian can return to his former pure and innocent self, thus, Dorian killed his intrinsic self with his actions. The pool of blood is described as black; this unorthodox description is cleverly used to convey a sense of death. This grim feeling forecasts Dorian's physical demise in the final stages of the novel.

Following Dorian's murder of Basil he is enveloped in an onslaught of death. "For a few seconds he stood bending over the balustrade and peering down into the black seething well of darkness. Then he took out the key and returned to the room, locking himself in as he did so"(116). Dorian stares into a seething abyss of darkness, symbolizing death and how Dorian has been flooded by it. Dorian locking himself inside a room mirrors the encasement of Dorian's soul within death, due to his sinful act towards Basil. Dorian's choice to enclose himself embodies Dorian's own decision to kill Basil, thus killing himself. The repetitive characteristics of the balustrade, lack of human presence and silence, all enrich the deprivation of life within the room. This parallel to Dorian's own internal non-existence is clearly apparent. Cleverly, Dorian's interior death prophesizes the penultimate scene of the book in which Dorian physically dies on account of exterminating his own portrait.

Wilde draws many correlations between the deaths of Basil and Dorian, exposing how both are results of Dorian's actions. "The Woodwork creaked, and seemed to cry out as if in pain. He stopped several times, and waited. No: everything was still. It was merely the sound of his own footsteps" (117). The anguish emitted from the stairs personifies the feeling of pain within Dorian, outlined by the realization it was his own footsteps causing the floor to creak. The fact he hears his own footsteps as the culprit indicates Dorian himself is responsible for the pain and internal demise he is experiencing. Wilde's reiteration of the stillness continues to exposit the state of lifelessness. Through Dorian's pain, his murder of Basil causes himself both internally and physiologically to become a non-living being.
