Undergraduate / 'I love sports' - Boston few things you should like to share about yourself? [2]

Hi there and Merry Christmas Everyone!

Here is my Boston U supplement. Hope i can get some opinions on it. I really appreciate honesty.

Thank you guys so much!

--------------------------

It is three weeks before the start of your freshman year at BU, and you are talking to your new roommate for the first time. Since you are trying to get to know each other, what are a few things you would want to share about who you are?

The first thing anyone should know about me is that I love sports. As a fan of two extremely successful American sport organizations in the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots, I am very accustomed to the tradition of success. Needless to say I was devastated when the Celtics lost in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals to their arch nemesis, after an outstanding under the radar playoff run, and when the Patriots blew the lead in the Super Bowl XLII to lose the championship game after an impressive undefeated regular season.

Besides watching sports, I also enjoy playing them. Living in Hong Kong, a place where land is scarce, football isn't a sport that many people play. This has allowed me to focus most of my free time on Basketball. I have played on the school basketball team since Grade 8 and our school has managed to win one well-deserved championship in this time. I have also participated as a basketball coach for the younger students in our school.

Entertainment wise, my favorite band is Coldplay, but I am not a big enough fan to stick up posters of them in my room. As a sport fanatic, it should come as no surprise that my favorite movie is based on a sport. The Express not only portrays one of the best running backs in college football history, but being set in the late 1950s, the start of the Civil Rights Movement, the movie also tackles many political and social problems such as racism and discrimination, something I take an interest in.

Further interests I have outside the classroom include Photography and Public Speaking. This led me to participate in my schools Digital Photography Club of which I was formerly Co-President. With my natural interest in public speaking, I was appointed as team captain in last years Debating Society, which I was a member of for over six years. I also participated in the Hong Kong Model United Nations as a delegate, representing Thailand, the United Kingdom and Russia.

I also exceptionally enjoy helping the less fortunate. One of my biggest contributions was back in grade 10, when I was appointed Head of Stage and Set Design for "Verve"; our school's first charity fashion show. We were able to raise the most money from a single event in our school's history, and were fittingly awarded the "Ulrike Schwarzer Award", for significant contributions made to GSIS during the year.

I took Economics, Mathematics and Physics during my senior year in high school, but really my interest lies in business and economics. You will more than likely catch me reading the newest issue of The Economist. Current issues that intrigue me concern the global fiscal problems, prospects of economic recession and monetary policies. This, in addition to my interest in how different economies have been managed in these years of uncertainty, has helped me decide to pursue Business and Management at undergraduate level.

There are many other things you should know about me, but I believe this provides a pretty simple introduction into who I am.

Undergraduate / 'different charity events' - Common App experience [2]

Hey EssayForum and Members,

here is my common app essay. Just wondering what people think of it. also do you think it completely answers the question?

thanks! make any changes you wish :)

Merry Christmas!

Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

Since the start of my adolescence, I have always been encouraged to partake in many different charity events, whether it be through organizing a talent show, or helping out with something as simple as a bake sale. I always felt like I was doing my part, contributing to the less fortunate in society. But things can change in the blink of an eye. While in the process of raising money to participate in a charity basketball game, one of my rather emphatic and assertive friends came up to me and said "... It's charity. So?" I was stunned!

This is when I first realized that all my past charity contributions had merely been through raising money. Whilst I am proud to have helped raise over 100 000 HKD from our school's fashion show, but the fact that I had never had any hands-on charity experience started to dawn on me.

Last year, for my school's annual Discovery Week trip, I decided to travel to the outskirts of Nepal, a place prominent for its multitude of soaring mountains. Though a thrilling trip was offered to experience this classic wilderness, I decided to take a more cordial trip to a small orphanage in the Kathmandu vicinity, where I could personally further understand the real meaning of charity.

Katja House, an orphanage where children of all ages are welcome with open arms, proved to be inspirational. My first impressions were mixed; coming from an economically vibrant city where orphans are rarely heard of, it was hard for me to comprehend the customs of their lives. However, reading through files describing past families of the children, I began to appreciate my parents at a whole new level. It had rarely crossed my mind that the blessing of growing up with a mother and father is so imperative. These children, some of whom had to share a bed at night, seemed untroubled despite how little they had. I felt a little selfish inside, but seeing the glimmer of hope and happiness in each of their eyes inspired me to the fullest, and it made me feel obliged to do what I could to help them. The week could not have gone by any faster. One week of handyman work and bonding with the kids, who are now my friends, doesn't sound like a lot, but it was truly fulfilling.

I used to feel good about myself every time I dropped the spare change I had into the donation box in Starbucks, but I now realize that is not what charity is solely about. My experience at Katja House has turned me into a more considerate and appreciative person; someone who is now grateful for what my family and society has given me. From this immensely rewarding experience, I decided to travel on another charity Discovery Week trip this year, and I know there will be many more of such to come.

Undergraduate / 'It's not solely about the academics' - Emory University [3]

Hey EssayForum and members,

this is my essay for Emory University and I just wanted some opinions on it. I'm not too sure if it's good or not so if you guys could let me know what you think that would be great. Thanks

Also, It says 250 words but I am currently at 259 words, will that jeopardize my chances of getting in?

What are the unique qualities of Emory University, and the specific school(s) to which you are applying (Emory College of Arts and Sciences, Oxford College, or both), that make you want to become part of Emory University? In what ways do you hope to take advantage of the qualities you have identified? (250 Words)

Today's undergraduate has a very large variety of schools to choose from, but studying at Emory University means significantly more to me than just another school. It has irrefutably earned its ranking as one of the most globally exalted and renowned universities through its strive for academic excellence through modern practice.

However, to me, attending university is not solely about the academics. It is the opportunity to explore and expand your interests and coalesce with a diverse group of bright, young scholars and inspirational professors. I am especially keen to learn attend former president, Jimmy Carter's annual seminar to learn how political, social and economical situations are managed during tough times, such as now.

Another main reason why I aspire to study at Emory University, more specifically Emory College of Arts and Sciences and Goizueta Business School, is its proximity to the global business hub of Atlanta. Not only am I a big Hawks fan, but as a potential business student, Atlanta also provides many diverse business and internship opportunities with numerous acclaimed business headquarters located there, such as Coca-Cola.

Coming from a very small and tightly knit school community, a small student faculty ratio is ideal. With an average of 7:1 at Emory College and 5:1 and Goizueta Business School, I believe this will provide me with a familiar atmosphere and help me succeed at Emory.

There are many other reasons why I desire to study at Emory University, and I shall be delighted if I get the chance.
