Student Talk / Can't edit any part of the common application, although I haven't submitted it yet. Why? [16]

"and the payment thing: unless you made the payment on the commonapp website, it will have a red triangle for you. my WUSTL pays on their website and they also have red triangle instead of green ones."

Apparently I accidentally paid for UPENN after I decided I wasn't going to apply there. I don't know how to get my money back now, but I know I clicked to pay for UVA...

Student Talk / Payment Question (it doesn't show up on the Common App site yet) [21]

Yes yes yes... I know I paid the fee on time, but it hasn't showed up on the common app page and it won't allow me to submit the other parts of the application until it shows up. It tells me that I still need to pay the fee, which I have... The application is due 01/02/2009, so I'm wondering if It's ever going to come up so I can submit it! :S

Student Talk / Payment Question (it doesn't show up on the Common App site yet) [21]

Maybe I've worded the question wrong though.

I have already payed first. I even got an E-mail confirmation saying I had paid. The only problem is that the payment hasn't showed up on the commonapp page. Is it going to show up in time for me to submit the actual application? If not, what in the world will I do?

Student Talk / Payment Question (it doesn't show up on the Common App site yet) [21]

I have paid my payment for one of my schools, but it isn't showing up on the Common App site yet. Does anyone know how long it generally takes? I have to pay before I can submit the other things, so it needs to show up before tomorrow night...

Student Talk / Can't edit any part of the common application, although I haven't submitted it yet. Why? [16]

Yes, I saved every document that I submitted & thanks, I just looked at the alternate version. Now that I think about it though, I'm not really sure if I need to change anything.

While I'm at it though,

Do any of you know when the last date to take a subject test is? I'm taking the reg. SAT again this January and I'm not sure if I'll be able to take the SAT II.

Also, when do my teacher evaluations need to be turned in? Hopefully not on the same date as the application...

Student Talk / Can't edit any part of the common application, although I haven't submitted it yet. Why? [16]

I just submitted my common application for my first college and now when I go to my other colleges to finish those, it will not let me edit any part of the common application, although I haven't submitted those particular applications yet. Does anyone know why this is???

I guess what I'm asking is, when I submit my Common App alone, does that mean I can't edit it for any of the other schools??

Undergraduate / Is it ok to use fragments in extracurricular activities? [6]

Alright, how is it possible to shorten it, without losing the detail?

I have changed it to this:

A scholarly knowledge of everything from fine arts to physics and geography to athletes is imperative to the success of a Scholastic Bowl team. For four years I have constantly sharpened my skills in every subject matter I come in contact with, in hopes of not only adding to my team's success, but also of achieving my personal goal of becoming the most knowledgeable person that I can be. The learning has consumed a lot of my time and energy, but it has led our team to the state competition for three years in a row and to countless victories over other teams. I owe most of my knowledge and discipline to my coach, who has worked passionately to give me the best resources possible for success and reprimanded me when I have started to slack off.

Undergraduate / Is it ok to use fragments in extracurricular activities? [6]

Hello. I'm doing my short answer for extracurricular activities and am wondering if the adcom's will mind if we use a fragment for dramatic effects. What do you all think? Here's part of the answer. The fragment's in the first sentence.

Authors, artists, composers, physics, geography, world history, mythology, technology, religion, biology, medicine, sports, world leaders, current events, and a multitude of other topics. A scholarly knowledge of these topics is imperative to the success of Scholastic Bowl teams. For four years I have been honing my knowledge on all of these topics. The practice has been intense, but it has lead us to the state competition for three years in a row.

Undergraduate / It was late. Beyond late - STONYBROOK ESSAY [2]

This is decent. I'm not sure if this is the strongest topic that you could have chosen, but for the length constraints, it is written quite well. Just some general thoughts:

I'm not sure if the first quote is necessary. I would think of one more to related to the trigonometric predicament or to dedication.

I saw peered out my window and surveyed the rain as itas it poured pour down onto the city streets.

The wind sounded like whistles as it blew approximately forty-five miles per hour. I would use a generalized term for how fast the wind was blowing. This sounds odd.

That's just a few things I saw. Hope that helped.

Undergraduate / An Iffy Topic (the true art of music) [4]

Thanks so much for the reply. I figured I should reflect more on how the piece influences me as well, but after reading tons of essays that always had a "and this is how so-and-so taught me discipline (or humility, etc.), I was quite honestly confused and wondered if the admission officers would even understand what I was talking about.

Do you believe I'm supposed to include some life-altering event that this music has had on me? I feel as if the admission officers are expecting something life-altering...

Anyways, thanks again.

Undergraduate / An Iffy Topic (the true art of music) [4]

I started writing this personal essay yesterday because of my heavy schedule & this will be the Personal Essay that I use for all Common App schools.... I feel like I've picked an extremely odd topic, something I hope will catch the reader's attention. Does it sound decent so far? Am I going in the wrong direction? The prompt says to choose a creative work, but I really don't understand how I can move away from the work and bring it all back to me.. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.. This is also just a few paragraphs; There is more to go..

____
Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.

As I silently took my seat in the colossal concert hall, I could not help but feel a bit anxious about the upcoming concert. I observed hundreds of musicians who lined the stage in preparation for the ninety-minute performance of Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony and was suddenly awestruck by the true art of music. Up until that night, I had only heard the Austrian composer's Second Symphony through the speakers of my iPod and was understandably eager to experience a live performance of the piece. Little did I know, this work would have a profound impact on how I viewed music and mold me into the person that I am today.

I was introduced to the works of Gustav Mahler and to classical music in general quite unexpectedly. My parents began sending me to take formal piano lessons at the age of eleven, but it was not until I began studying under a college music professor that I became acquainted with the classical musical genre. I discovered that a mere acquaintance was not enough and I delved into the genre, quickly discovering the massive Second Symphony, also fittingly called the Resurrection Symphony, and falling in love with it's singular ability to keep me on the edge of my seat while creating an ephemeral listening experience.

Although the music may seem abstract, the influence it continues to have on me is astounding. Every time I sit down to listen to the piece, I find myself drifting into another dimension and forgetting the stresses of the day. The piece opens with a dark, tumultuous tremolo from the cellos and slowly blossoms into hope, which is assured when the solo soprano softly explains that "the loving God will give me a little light, which will light me into that eternal blissful life!" The final movement is, for me, the apotheosis of all finales. All of my doubts are put to rest after the chorus triumphantly proclaims, "that for which you suffered, to God will it lead you!"
