Undergraduate / "Halmoni" - UT Essay: Someone who made an impact/why this person is important. [3]

Write an essay in which you tell us about someone who has made an impact on your life and explain how and why this person is important to you.

Throughout our lives, we come across myriad of various people. We meet our brothers and sisters, our mom and dad, our first crush, and multitudes more; however, there is one person who stands out more than the rest. This person taught me how to pray, how to act properly, and how to live life. This person took care of me when our parents worked late nights. This person changed my life. This person is my halmoni.

Halmoni, or "grandma" in Korean, has taken care of me ever since I was born. She has been there for each of my cousins, my brother, and me. When my cousin, Jerry, was born, she flew to Ohio to baby-sit him while my aunt and uncle worked. When Jerry was diagnosed with leukemia, she went back to make sure everything was in order and came back to us in Houston when she could confirm that all was well there. Up until recently, halmoni drove everywhere. Halmoni would drive back and forth between my house and my cousin's house to get us to school and our private lessons in time; however, she did not just drive us, she drove her friends who were not able to drive as well.

Her faith in God is something I have always admired. While I whined to Him about not getting what I wanted for my birthday or Christmas, she thanked Him for bringing me into this world. While I sulked at home for not being able stay out longer and play with friends, she thanked Him for protecting me from stranger danger. While I refused to eat vegetables, she thanked Him for keeping me healthy. My grandmother's faith in Him inspired me to find something that I can be passionate about.

Throughout my seventeen years on this planet, I have not found a single activity that I wanted to wholly devote myself to. Drawing, volunteering, and playing instruments brought me some satisfaction but they are not something I would dedicate my life to. Nevertheless, my search goes on! Even though I have not found anything I want to commit myself to, my grandmother's devotion to God motivates me find something similar.

Not too long ago, halmoni fought pancreatic cancer. With my brother studying in Korea and my parents working everyday, I found myself caring for her just as she did for me so many years ago. Although I am not as wise or as reliable, I hope to become someone similar to another as she is to me.

My essay isn't actually complete. It's sort of a rough-rough draft. I'm not sure which parts to put more detail into/I don't know the direction it's going in.
