Undergraduate / College Green; Brown U - TRANSFER - Neuroscience [8]

On the first day of my chemistry of emotion course, the professor posed a series of questions to the class: Why do you have an affinity for certain academic areas? Why do you think in a specific way? Does your brain shape you, or do you shape your brain? Who is in charge, you or your brain? I latched onto these questions and turned them over in my mind - or I suppose my frontal lobe - for hours. As I contemplated these questions and read more on the topic, I found myself looking at the world from a new perspective - a perspective from which I recognized the value and importance of even the most basic functions in the brain. The starting method is good and capturing however towards the end of the paragraph you can be more expressive on how you captured the questions into your desire to learn more about it and how you thought the curiosity aroused in you would take you to?..

One hundred billion neurons make up the brain. Each cell connects to approximately ten thousand neighboring neurons, meaning a cubic centimeter of brain tissue has more neural connections than there are stars in the Milky Way galaxy. The brain processes and responds to billions of signals every second. Our genes and our individual experiences shape the brain, creating new and unique pathways. Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to understand what makes our brains so beautifully complex, and ultimately to understand what makes us human. . I think there is no need of elaborating this..It will be astonishing and mesmerising to you how the neurocognitive process and its signal paths are working, but not to the ones who knows about it very well. What they need to know 1. what specific aspect of neuroscience made you interested? 2. Why did that make an interest in you? 3. How is that interest connected to your passion (what do you desire to achieve? 4. How do you find apart from the interest thing, will make you a good candidate for this (what did you do upto now to follow your interests? 5. What are your skills, accomplishments, awards, challenges etc?

From modeling neuroplasticity to human cognition, every topic within neuroscience fascinates me. The variety of courses and research opportunities within the neuroscience program makes Brown University the ideal place to purse my studies. I would broaden and explore my understanding of the topic through courses on sleep and chronobiology research, neurochemistry and behavior, and computational neuroscience. Additionally, I would use the resources available to me at Brown and combine my knowledge gleaned in the classroom with practical applications in the lab. I would indulge my curiosity and desire to better understand humanity researching with the Brain Health Initiative on basic mechanisms of neurological disorders at the Brown Institute for Brain Sciences or with Professor Patrick on the influence of neurotransmitter activity on behavior. Many of these statements are repetitive on your same interest. Refine it..

Furthermore, the prospect of sculpting my education among a community of self-motivated learners at Brown exhilarates me. The open curriculum would enhance my education by enabling my individual and varied passions to guide my education. I intend to enroll in courses throughout the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, to enrich my understanding of the world from an interdisciplinary perspective. Brown offers a number of classes that I just feel inclined to take, like Comparative Animal Physiology, Human Trafficking, Uncomfortable Media, and Ancient Egyptian Religion and Magic, simply for the sake of learning and developing all of my interests to the fullest extent I can in only three years.

Although the typical track for a neuroscience major is graduate school or medical school, I intend to apply to veterinary school. Brown University has outstanding resources for pre-veterinary students including the ability to volunteer at the Animal Care Facility linked to Brown that cares for the animals used for studies at the university and medical school, as well as local veterinary hospitals such as the Providence River Animal Hospital.

These are just okay statements if are to be considered for just an admission. But in the context of applying for a scholarship or special merits.. these are inadequate. So it would depend on the requirements.

Scholarship / "International relations", my dream career; UWCs Scholarship- Why interested? [4]

I think this is relatively a weak essay and you seriously have to put your inputs into this essay carefully.

Think

1. Why do you think you are special to win this scholarship
2. There are many competing for this, what makes you different from them
2. Dont rely on qualitative and adjective terminologies more like diverse, intellectual etc.
3. You have given too much of appraisal for the University, but where is your part that is the most decisive aspect of demonstrating your passion and skills

4. Remember you have only 300 words which is very limited, so dont over react and pile up words those are irrelevant. Each word here is a precious tool for highlighting the best of you.

Regards

Scholarship / "Questioning my desire"; Scholarship for a PhD/ Why I deserve it? [4]

I had a perceived answer to the question, why I think I deserve this scholarship; is a platform for self-appraisal of personal accomplishments, awards, and meritocratic reflections. I could also boast about my endeavors in academics and personal life-: excellent academic history (appeared in top 3-5 ranks during the whole academia), many national & international researches and projects in Europe, Asia and Middle East, appearances in international conferences (Conference of Parties (COP 17), Water Research Forums, UK; International Science Fair, USA), many awards in non-curriculum activities (more than 100 awards), volunteering activities- reflecting the balanced side of me. I believe all of these would substantiate my answer, 'Yes this is why I think I deserve this scholarship'. But none of these adds to why I ultimately believe I need (different from deserve) this scholarship.

During the years of career advancements, although enjoying the pride of working in researches and projects of United Nations, SGS Group, and Environmental Agency, UK etc., I often burst into tears looking at people in Africa, India, Bangladesh, Europe severely vulnerable to poverty, water, and food crisis. I have seen policies and governments failing relentlessly to support what they offered and international conferences, acted as no better than a cafeteria. Exacerbating problems of water crisis and its close nexus to energy security has been given little attention in the global research and policy developments by corporates and governments. My struggles to draw their attention towards arsenic and heavy metallic pollutants in South Asian Countries, lack of financing mechanism in water, water collection and recycling in India were squandered questioning my expertise and knowledge.

All the challenging experiences in my life (including financial troubles) made me a very strong person all together. "All the great persons lived in this world are shaped the obstacles in their ways- APJ Abdul Kalam. It is the same understandings made me quit a highly paid unethical job in huge multinational corporate although it was a mean of survival for a mediocre family like mine. My consciousness of social obligations and the vitality of education and passion, even though brought me immense pain, I find them as one step closer to my success. This is exactly why I think; I deserve and need this scholarship.

A PhD in water management aspects enabling me to develop knowledge and skills in areas of cost effective desalination (renewable energy), water harvesting and recycling, advanced water treatment methods, effective water footprint assessment, integrated water management strategies etc. to support a wider community to benefit from water resource distribution, develop a hydrological accounting models. This would act as pillars of strengthening local and poor community by rewarding them and alleviating poverty, income disparity, food and energy crises.

The roles of great international universities like----- in structuring excellent academic systems with quality research to support elite individuals to develop and contribute their skills for societies are unfathomable. These Universities of -----at multicultural diversity, intellect and international quality will be the ideal place to design me for a better future.

It is difficult to portray the real talent and passion in a piece of paper. However I can promise that this scholarship will give me an opportunity to develop into a person of greatest dreams with a solid voice that the whole World will listen one day. 'Because I believe in why I do is more important than what I do'.
