I'm applying for an internship this summer. help! please disregard the X,Y,& Z. they're the names of the university i attend, university i am applying to and the professor i am currently working with.
I am interested in applying for the summer REU in Molecular Genetics and Genomes position offered in Y University. Currently I am a junior at X majoring in Biological Sciences with an anticipated graduation date of May 2013. After I complete my undergraduate education in Biological Sciences, I hope to extend my research and earn my Ph.D in the field of Biology. By participating in this program, I hope to have some advanced experience with research in Biology that would aid me tremendously in pursuing my future goals and reveal paths I might otherwise never discover. I am currently assisting Dr. Z with his research project in the department of Biological Sciences at X. In his lab, I have become even more absorbed in the biological world. I have learned not only how to conduct experiments but also how to undertake scientific research, laying a solid foundation for my future study. This experience has upgraded my lab experiment capacity and opened up my vision of pursuing a career in the scientific world. With the skills I have learned so far, I believe that I would an asset to the REU program at Y. My positive attitude, leadership, communications, and organizational skills will also aid me in making this internship possible. By participating in this internship, I hope to have some advanced experience with research in that would aid me in acquiring the background necessary for a future career in scientific research. This internship would enable me to work in an environment with people who share similar interests. Furthermore, it would provide me with the ideal opportunity to assist at your program and to expand my research skills. If I get accepted into the program, I plan to devote my full energy and time during the summer.

I would actually omit this sentence. You are repeating what you said at the beginning. Maybe you could instead give another reason why you are so interested in that career field.
