Prompt: Tell us about your educational and career goals and objectives. (1000 words)
I am an Arizona State University freshman pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, driven by a dream that has been close to my heart for many years. The moment that solidified my decision to become a nurse came during one of the most challenging times for my family-my dad's recovery from a serious illness. When he was hospitalized, I remember the mix of fear and helplessness we all felt, unsure of when he would return home. Amid the uncertainty, the nurses were always there, providing a source of hope and stability. They tirelessly monitored his condition and progress, reassured our worries, and treated my dad with a level of compassion and care that left a big impact on me. Even though they were juggling thousands of responsibilities and patients at the same time, they always made us feel like my dad was their top priority. Witnessing their unwavering dedication during such a vulnerable period inspired me to follow in their footsteps and strive to make a meaningful difference in others' lives.
Ultimately, my dream is to become a nurse practitioner, specializing in providing care to patients facing mental health challenges. Mental health struggles often leave individuals feeling isolated or defeated, and I hope to provide not only clinical expertise but also empathy and emotional support. I aim to create an environment where patients feel safe enough to share their troubles and feel valued while guiding them and their families through their journey with dignity and hope.
As I work towards this goal, my focus as an undergraduate student is to excel in my studies and embrace every opportunity to grow as a future nurse. Arizona State University has given me the foundation to begin my journey, and I'm determined to make the most of it.
After completing my undergraduate studies and receiving my nursing license, I plan to work as a psychiatric nurse for a few years to gain hands-on experience and deepen my understanding. During this time, I want to immerse myself in the realities of psychiatric nursing, working closely with patients facing challenges such as depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, and other mental health disorders. These experiences will allow me to further develop empathy, resilience, compassion, and the necessary experience to excel as a mental health professional.
Once I'm confident in my abilities, I plan to return to school to earn a Master of Science in Nursing, focusing on psychiatric mental health care. By pursuing a higher education, I will gain knowledge on how to diagnose and treat patients with mental health conditions while still being able to provide the same level of empathy and compassion. In this role, I want to focus on providing holistic care in a variety of settings, such as in community health centers, rural hospitals, and outpatient clinics to address the growing need for accessible and accessible mental health care services. Beyond patient care, I hope to take my passion for mental health to the community by acting as an advocate for greater mental health services and working to reduce the stigma surrounding those with mental health conditions. Ultimately, I want to be a voice for the unheard and a trusted and empathetic practitioner who creates meaningful connections with their patients and their families while providing care that can help improve the patient's life.
As I work towards these goals, I am committed to excelling in my education and taking advantage of every opportunity I can get to learn more about the nursing field. I also plan on working as a certified nurse assistant, gaining first-hand experience in the medical field while taking on financial responsibility for my education. By doing this, I hope to ease the financial burden on my parents who have worked tirelessly every day to support me and my brother. This is one way I can begin to repay them for the sacrifices they have made for my future.
