Chevening Essay on leadership



Hello, this is my Chevening Essay for the Leadership aspect, and I really need more input to make my essay to be more outstanding. Thank you.

Leadership is about bringing the team unitedly to achieve the goals during the ups and downs of many circumstances and gathering the team member's insight to tackle the issues that might come in a way.

As a Person In Charge of one of the projects of substantial start-up companies in Indonesia, I'm handling their project with Singapore Government on the Operational side that needs more attention and details to accomplish the goals. The task demands a leader who can manage the time and human resources of the team. My role here also needs to gather insight from team members that can improve the team's productivity.

There is one time that the team is facing a critical circumstance when the company is having a big promotion even so the human resource is unequal with it. Due to this imbalance, some team members become not working according to the previously agreed SOP. It happens because they work quickly but not precisely, so the analysis done by most of them is inappropriate. In addition, due to the inadequate human resources provided by the company at the time of this flash sale project, the team members had to do overtime for up to 3- 4 hours every day. In which, this overtime from my point of view is not efficient enough if the team members have been tired of working for 9 hours straight.

So with this issue, the first task that I do as a Person In Charge is to check with the team members and ask them the obstacles they experienced for the first and second days of flash sale held by the company so that we can evaluate team performance first, also explaining that doing the correct analysis towards the case is an essential thing. The following step to overcome these obstacles is to check with the human resource team after doing detailed calculations to provide troops from other divisions to temporarily help my division since the existing workload is not in balance with existing human resources. It's because to help to plot the job desk that will be done during the flash sale so that even if overtime is needed, it will not be more than 2 hours because the team member's mind is already not fresh, so it is not efficient. Another fundamental thing to do is to evaluate daily after work hours and embrace team members to overcome the obstacles experienced during a day of work so that as a leader, I can also be their storytelling friend and influence them to perform better in every given task.

As a result of this issue, we can overcome it together, since we are working as a team and looking for a suitable solution, which in this case, we did by plotting the job desk based on the urgency with the help of another's division team member. So for me, a leader is also an influencer that can bring the best of your team members. By joining Chevening, I also wish that I could sharpen my leadership from different aspects so I can enhance my problem-solving skills.

This speaks more of your organizational skills, which should not be confused with leadership and influencing abilities. Yes, a leader must have strong organizational skills. Organizational skills need to be supportive of team improvement. Team improvement is achieved through proper delegation, skills enhancement, and less micro.management. Abilities that are not evident in this presentation. There is no reference to leadership development or growth in the presented situation as it focuses on only one project related event. A true leader of the influential kind emerges in various scenarios and professional needs. That aspect should be presented over a series of events not necessarily within a single pproject. Actually the leadership management aspect is very weak.

The role you played in your leadership essay is not really stressed. Talk more on what you did instead of talking about what your team did.

I will opine if you use the STAR method in rewriting your essay.
S- What was the situation
T- What task were you to carry out
A- What actions did you take
R- The results.
Your results must show it was impact full. Use statistics when measuring your results.

Overall, this essay will not sound clear to the reviewers. I will suggest you look for clearer examples of how you acted as a leader and not just a leader but an influencer.
