Post Career Plans for chevening

Health care in Nigeria, which is a shared responsibility of the three tiers of government; i.e. federal, state and local, is beset with numerous challenges. Chief of these problems is the shortage of doctors to man the few and poorly equipped facilities available for citizens. One cannot discuss the issue of manpower shortage without first addressing the problem of 'brain drain' in this sector. A recdent study puts the doctor-patient ratio at 1:4250 in Nigeria.

The Department for International Development (DFID) leads the UK's global efforts to end extreme poverty, deliver the Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) and tackle a wide range of global development challenges. Interestingly, fostering Economic development and basic services in Nigeria is one of the headline deliverables of UK aid with the view of improving the lives of the most vulnerable in Nigeria, through job creation, better health care and education.

My immediate plan after completion of the MSc Cardiac ultrasound/ Echocardiography would be to continue the journey towards becoming a specialist in Cardiology. I would want to establish my practice in a reputable tertiary hospital where I can teach medical students, interns and residents the basics and recent advances in the field of cardiology. Practicing in a tertiary centre will help broaden my knowledge and perspective in my field, open doors for interactions with professionals in cardiology and other fields as well also give me the opportunity to engage in multidisciplinary research in cardiology specifically and Internal medicine generally. I hope to publish papers based on my research and work my way up to become a Professor of cardiology.

The chevening scholarship will serve as a launch pad for my career in cardiology, as I intend to come back to Nigeria to practice and teach. I realise that there is a great need in our health sector and I intend to fulfil my role and train others just I have been trained.

Makarios. What's the full prompt? And the maximum word count? This your essay is too short or is it the word count? It's also too plain. Your transition from one paragraph to another is not really good.

I'm a Nigeria and I can relate with your essay. The first and second paragraphs just wasted valuable word count, I'll suggest you use the first paragraph to discuss Nigeria and the likes you'll like to base the easy on, before stating your post career plans.

Why don't you start with this "Study puts Nigeria doctor-patient ratio at 1:4250... what's your source? Like "A study by UNICEF puts"
then continue using the population key. Nigeria, being the most populous country in Africa is faced with... "

The third and last paragraphs are nice but still need to be polished. State that upon graduation, you'll return to Nigeria where you'll practice. Let this part be well developed and strong. I think your success depends on how good you sell the coming back home thingy.

About your teaching career, discuss how you'll enroll in Nigeria university for PhD alongside your teaching job.

Thanks a lot. Maximum word count is 500 so I was tryn not to overshoot. I'll definitely need to work on my transition as you suggested. I was trying to work from the magnitude of the problem to Uk govts intervention in our health sector( I couldn't really get much by the way because their they focus mainly on terrorism and corruption).

I'll make corrections appropriately.

Health care in Nigeria, which is a shared responsibility of the three tiers of government; i.e. federal, state and local, is beset with numerous challenges. Chief of these problems is the shortage of doctors to man the few and poorly equipped facilities available for citizens. A recent survey by the Nigerian Medical association puts the Doctor-patient ratio at 1:4250, a far cry from the 1: less than 600 recommended by the World Health Organisation. It is my view that to address the issue of manpower shortage we must first tackle the problem of 'brain drain' in this sector.

Interestingly, fostering Economic development and basic services in Nigeria is one of the headline deliverables of UK aid with the view of improving the lives of the most vulnerable in Nigeria, through job creation, better health care provision and education. The Department for International Development (DFID) leads the UK's global efforts in this regard, delivering the Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) and tackling a wide range of global developmental challenges.

My immediate plan after completion of the MSc Cardiac ultrasound/ Echocardiography would be to continue the journey towards becoming a specialist in Cardiology. Practicing in a tertiary centre will help broaden my knowledge and perspective in my field, open doors for interactions with professionals in other fields as well as give me the opportunity to engage in multidisciplinary research in cardiology specifically and Internal medicine generally. I intend to obtain a doctorate and apply myself to research; I hope to publish papers based on my research and work my way up to become a Professor of cardiology.

The chevening scholarship will serve as a launch pad for me, providing me with the needed international exposure in the UK, as I intend to come back to Nigeria to practice and teach. I realise that there is a great need in our health sector and I intend to take responsibility, play my role and train others just as I have been trained.

i hope this is better

CAREER PLAN QUESTION
Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. (minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words)

Blessed, your essay does not depict an impressive post study career plan. This is so general in reference that it could have been applied to any applicant within the same field. I strongly recommend that you try and find a method by which you can highlight the continued promotion of the Chevening scholarship within your career plans. You may recall that the Chevening prompt clearly indicates that you must align your career plans with the objectives of Chevening and the UK in your country. Therefore, the very least you can do is indicate that you will work at a specific hospital that has ties such as research projects or outreach programs in cooperation with the UK government or DFID. If your plans do not include a method by which you can work with the UK government via an applicable agency in Nigeria, then your application will not be given the same serious consideration as the students whose post study and career plans will allow them to continue collaborating with the UK government. This is important because the UK government is sponsoring your scholarship so you need to show that you will be a worthy alumna who will continue to embody the objectives of the scholarship program and enhance the international relations of your country with the UK through direct collaboration with the UK government or UK agencies in your country as related to your medical field.

Figure out where the programs of DFID fit into your career goals and long term plans. You need to present a viable cooperation program with that UK organization in your country and yourself. You cannot just mention them and then not create a relationship between your work and their existence in Nigeria. You have to work directly with that organization as they are the UK government unit in Nigeria that will allow you to continue your Chevening / UK collaboration upon your return to your country.

@Holt
thanks alot. i quite understand your point, and do realise that might be a weak point for my essay, i had tried looking for projects that will serve as a link tho, unfortunately DFID is more geared towards support for terrorism and the fight against corruption plus humanitarian aids fro IDPs. I'll keep searching. thanks a million.
