dream more, learn more, do more
Hello,
So i am applying for chevening scholarship this year and i just finished writing my leadership essay and i am so worried it's not a good one so i really need your feedback as it's my first time writing an essay for a scholarship.
Thank you in advance...
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more you are a leader." John Quincy Adams. among all the characteristics and skills needed to make a leader such as honesty, ambition and decision-making capabilities, I believe the most important one is the ability to keep the subordinates motivated.
Having been an editor for an online initiative that aimed to educate people about Biotechnology and other biological fields, by translating and simplifying researches and biology related articles, one of my roles and probably the most challenging one was Motivating and pushing other members to put their greatest possible effort into something they won't get paid for. One of the most important factors that made it possible for me to succeed in such a challenging task was understanding how to communicate. This may seem easy. However, I think it's very hard and the difficulty here lies in the ability to talk nicely without appearing weak and show your strength but without being harsh. By understanding the art of communication and choosing the right language, one can not only motivate others effectively, but they can also leave an impact on others.
In my opinion, there's something more important for a great leader than just motivating others, which is influencing. Compared to motivation, influencing has a far greater impact, motivation is about giving somebody a reason to do something, influencing on the other hand is a higher-level skill, which is having the power to affect or change someone's behavior or preference without coercion of any kind. To be more clear, what makes a company's sales usually rise when a celebrity promotes its products? Influencing is about using both verbal and non-verbal communication at your disposal, it's about having full control instead of just letting things happen, along with confidence and enthusiasm, this will allow you to create the impact you want to leave on others. To give a clear example, I was told by both my colleagues and the trainer, in one of the companies I used to work for as a medical representative, after finishing my presentation that I have encouraged the other trainees to give better presentations. "they wouldn't have performed very well if you haven't given your presentation first" so they said. Having confidence and using my communication skills in the way I mentioned earlier to engage the audience with me was exactly what I did to have such an effect on others.
In conclusion, with Confidence, enthusiasm, and the right communication along with other features such as integrity and decision-making capabilities, one can make a good leader who is able to make a real change to this world we live in, which is definitely in a need for this.
