Hi, I have a deadline to submit my application tomorrow (Urgent). Please suggest me any changes such as making the essay flow smoothly and ways to improve the language or context of the essay. I would really appreciate your help. THANKS
- Please outline your reasons (academic and financial) for applying for this scholarship (250-1500 characters)
"Know Thyself" - this simple and yet intuitive words spoken by the Greek philosopher Socrates is the central idea of my life. I still ask myself "what do I want to accomplish with this scholarship" as I fill up this application. I never want to keep my studies until exams are close because I am working part-time outside. I am a diligent student and never want to finish late my homework because I am tired from my work at McDonalds. What I want is to obtain 'First' throughout my academia, which I have done till now and be the youngest actuary of my country!
I was born in a middle-class family with high ambition to study at the world's finest institutions. My father strived hard and supported throughout my academic career at XX. However, I now face the biggest struggle to finding support for my postgraduate education. With my father having used all his savings and taking loans to pay for XX's high international tuition fees in the last three years, I am looking to you for support. I am at the final step to complete my education and become an actuary. Henceforth, for me, this scholarship is not only the money for my education fees, but is also the invisible staircase which takes me closer to the success.
- What are your career plans for the next five years after completing the X Masters degree, and how will a scholarship help you to achieve them? (250-1500 characters)
After graduating, I want to work at a X firm for two years. Within these two years, I want to gather as much experience and knowledge about the actuarial profession and how this niche field can be expanded and contribute in rising areas of interest such as risk management. I believe that my scholarship will give me a greater scope to indulge in the new development areas of the profession and research on more advanced topics while I am at XY.
Once I have completed my Fellowship and two years experience, I plan to start my own actuarial and consultancy firm in my home country, Y. There are currently very few financial firms and even fewer actuarial firms that have its origin in Asia. I believe the region can contribute to the world much more in not just primary and secondary industries but also in providing tertiary services like insurance and banking. Inspired by the many multinational firms from developed countries, my long-term goal is to build a multinational firm which starts from a less-developing nation like my country.
- As a recipient of this scholarship how would you further supplement your living and study expenses in Z (250-1500 characters)
I have been determined to live my dream in Z. Over the last three years, I have found out ways to live at low cost and make my share of contribution to my family. Despite the challenging nature of the actuarial discipline, I have worked at McDonalds for two years and have been tutoring at present to reduce the burden on my father and make my ends meet.
If I receive this scholarship, I would supplement my living and study expenses through teaching. For me, this would be a way to care for my father and ensure that he can start to save the money to repay back the enormous loans for my education over the years.
- Describe a profound event in your life and how it affected you (250-1500 characters)
I had the opportunity to study at undergraduation level at XX in Z and this was a life-changing event in every means. It exposed me to an endless variety of experiences, ideas and challenges that I never met before. Suddenly, I am among the most brilliant young minds around the world and giving them intellectually stimulating conversations and debates on a different level. The realisation that I am in a classroom where past Nobel Laureates has perhaps taught was for me the most invigorating moment! The thought simply pushed me to perform better and excel if not more, at least, at their level.
Other than academia, I have involved myself in many activities of different societies and clubs. From having the opportunity to be the AA Course Representative to trying out Salsa dance, these responsibilities and activities helped me to add many valuable social skills to myself. Also, working at McDonalds and tutoring students have made me a great team player and an effective coordinator and advisor now. Thanks to them, I have developed a unique ability for time management. If I win this scholarship, I am confident that I can handle any challenging task assigned to me within the designated time while providing leadership to others.
- As a recipient of this scholarship it is expected that you will give back to society in a similar manner. How do you plan to do this? (250-1500 characters)
After graduation and gaining experience from multinational firms in Z, I plan to start a consultancy firm which essentially solves the problems of our financial institutions. I want to bring together talented youths, provide them scope and financial support to obtain professional qualifications and strengthen our financial institutions with their valuable expertise.
There are a number of small specialised firms in my home country. I want to bring back the ideas and knowledge that I have expanded in country Z to Y. Therefore, I have a long-term goal to build a firm where all these niche services such as actuarial, financial and other specialty services can be found in one place and create a synergy effect. My dream is to ultimately develop our tertiary sector, create employment for masses and place the firm among the first multinational consultancy service providers from a developing country.
Therefore, this scholarship is not just a financial assistance to me. For me, it is the greatest opportunity for reaching my goal that would enlighten many lives around me.
