I'm applying for a scholarship to teach Spanish in the UK for 8 months.
The prompt is to explain my main motivation for applying for this program, and why should I get it.
Any feedback would be much appreciated!!
I am writing to you with the purpose of applying for the United Kingdom Language Assistants Programme. My name is X; I am 22 years old and I am currently in my fourth year of undergraduate studies at English Teacher Training Programme at Universidad CatĂłlica Silva HenrĂquez.
As a student and as a future English language teacher, I find practical experience to be invaluable. And that is exactly what the Language Assistants Programme has to offer, the experience of teaching in the most ideal environment for an English language teacher: the United Kingdom. This golden opportunity would broaden my knowledge of pedagogical work. It would provide me with better tools to improve my communicative skills, English level and of course to learn firsthand about the background of different cultures. I strongly believe in the importance of learning a second language and learning about the cultures of the world; for almost a quarter of my life I have cultivated a sincere desire to understand and connect with other cultures, and it is that sincere passion that would allow me to make the most of this experience.
Suffice it to say that the experience of living and working abroad goes beyond the academic and professional achievements. It helps broaden one's exposure and perspectives. There is something very extraordinary about being in a foreign environment: when you find yourself surrounded only by the unknown and out of your comfort zone, your capacities become fully utilized. This is the point that you will actually get to know yourself: personal growth, independent thinking and development of character are the main foci of life, and the accomplishment of those can be best achieve by the experience of living in a foreign country.
Throughout these four years I have been committed to several social projects, I have worked as a mentor, volunteer and tutor, broadening my perspective on teaching and understanding the challenges of the field, making it all more compelling and alluring. It is exciting to imagine myself having an impact on the language skills and cultural comprehension of the children with whom I will work. This practice would contribute to my personal and professional growth and it would be a defining step towards becoming the type of professional I aspire to be, and is something I simply cannot pass.
I have always set high goal for myself and I have always had to work hard to achieve them. In these past four years I have been put to test time and time again, and in every opportunity I have overcome the obstacles. It is with courage and conviction that I have persevered and succeeded, where most people would have crumbled. Life has made me stronger and rewarded me with firmness of character, a valuable trait in today's world. I will not pretend to know how exactly this opportunity would change me, but I do know it is an amazing chance to grow as a professional and as a person.
After completing the Language Assistants Programme, I intend to share this experience and knowledge with my classmates, friends, and eventually with my students. I believe it would help them understand the importance of learning not only English, but any foreign language. The beauty of knowledge is that once it is gained it by one it can be shared with other people, and I will seek to convey the meaning of this experience and inspire the students' minds to dream and crave the pursuit of further knowledge, and to feel as passionate as I do about culture and language.
I would be delighted to be a part of this program, and I hope this letter shows how important this opportunity is for me.
Yours sincerely,
X
