Leadership is a crucial point for organizational success. Leadership and influence are unions. It does not happen when your subordinates follow all your rules. However, it occurs when you become the influence and inspiration to them. As a teacher and a homeroom teacher, I experienced to be the role model of that leadership and that influence.
In 2015, I joined St. Fransiskus Assisi Senior High School, Samarinda. There, I acted as an English teacher and homeroom teacher for the 11th social class. Transferring knowledge was not the main challenge at the moment. Instead, the character building was. As a new teacher, I was given an extraordinary class which smart but somehow unique with various characteristics. Previous teachers disputed several students in my class were having some issues that should be solved. As a result, I made some efforts on how to find the best approach to guide them. Since Assisi is a Strong Disciplinary Catholic School, all students and teachers must obey school regulations, or else received reinforcement as disciplinary actions.
My students often received reinforcements for their attitudes. It caused by incomplete attributes, indiscipline poses in the flag ceremony, skipped school, mood swing, low GPA, ignorance, and disobedience. I regularly conducted a one-hour sharing class after school. It worked and was accepted by them. During the lesson, we discussed many options that will assist them to be better as healing with their parents, using various and interesting teaching media for all subjects (I discussed it with all teachers). After school prayers, I reminded our goal again and any updates about schools or paperwork to keep their spirit up. We also had a special reminder board in class. Created Whatsapp group and IG group as media for any updates regarding classes, paper works, homework, school's information, a summary of the daily subject material, thought of the day, and motivational words to support one another. It helped them gradually grew better in their attitude, subjects, cognition, and focus. I also kept contact with their parents by phone or direct meeting. They assisted me by discussing several updates and any progress about the children.
Within months our persevering works were significantly affected their performance and contributed achievement for our class. They shined in their ways. One of my students was the chairman of the student council at the moment. Many students in my class were either members of the student council raised GPA significantly. It made us received fewer reinforcements. The students actively involved in school events. Besides, they gained more self-esteem, trusted more people, became responsible at school, and received betterment. I believe they got inspired because of their and my perseverance work, team support, and love. Those experiences had taught me in such unique ways. Leadership here is when they accept the way you are and voluntarily follow you as their inspirational leader to reach the betterment together.
The Chevening scholarship is a great way to enhance my leadership skills and prepare me upon returning home.
