Essay 1: The Global UGRAD Program is for young leaders committed to serving their home communities. In the space below, please describe why you would be an excellent candidate for the Global UGRAD Program.
My essay :
Growing up in small community make me believe that every effort matters. I am an active member of society both in Taekwondo and muslim community. Taekwondo not also teach us about discipline and self defense but also deliver to community about healthy lifestyle and respect to those who are older and more experienced. For myself, taekwondo teach about commitment and self-confidence. By these values, I believe they can enrich me as a leader in any chance for the future. And I am sure I can make an impact within my community by pursuing to be a black belt taekwondo and to teach other people about taekwondo.
My muslim community teaches us about diversity and to pursue knowledge as far as you can. There's an old and famous proverb there which is "Pursue knowledge until Chinese country." This proverb encourages me to broaden my point of view by studying abroad.
Many homework in my muslim community especially in STEM education. For example, the declining interest in STEM fields by the students in my community and the lack of engineers in my country. I, who is majoring in Industrial Engineering, am called to solve these problems. I remember I have this dream to be a Nobel winner. Until now there is no Nobel winner from my country so I have this vision when I become a Nobel winner, my country's education will be seen by the world and I can prove that STEM field is worth taking. Even there is no Nobel awards for engineering, I don't give up so by joining to Global UGRAD I believe I can learn from many experts in America and collaborate together to increase the interest in STEM fields and encourages more people to take engineering.
I am genuinely love to meet other people. When I heard about Global UGRAD program, I see an opportunity to meet other people from different culture, background and perspective. These differences can enrich experience if I want to initiate a collaboration project. One idea I may suggest is a project that compares how these two citizens dress every season because America's citizen live in the country that has four seasons and Indonesia only has two seasons. The way of dressing itself will be very rich, depends of each individual's taste, culture, profession, and etc. And from clothes we can analyze how they are manufactured, what every person's need to dress, how to get color from the cloth you want to wear, and the possibility is infinite. I believe with this idea, STEM fields will become more attractive to learn.
Then, beside serving to communities, I am also the head of the class in my university. Become the head of the class hone my leadership and communication skills. I learn how to interact with lecturers, other staff and to manage my colleague at university if there are assignments given by the lecturers. Just by managing friends to submit assignments to lecturer teach me how to balance my ego and common interest, make the best decision making, how to delegate others, solve problem, and appreciate differences. These leading experiences make me grow to be a better person and from here I can rise to solve more complex problem in my community.
I believe every action that I have done can create meaningful change and participating in Global UGRAD can make the ripple of change bigger. From teaching discipline through taekwondo and encouraging more people to be interested in STEM, all these goals can be achieved by starting small steps from now.
