A good song is like a time machine.
The right song has the ability to transport its listener anywhere they want to be. Music is an outlet that allows me to escape from my troubles for a few brief moments; a way to look inward and reflect on whatever may be on my mind. One song in particular picks me up and drops me into my thoughts better than most. This song is Home, by Daughtry. To me it's about a rough journey in life, and how a person can face many hardships but always have something that makes them feel safe. It reminds me of how when I was little I found sanctuary in my Harry Potter books when my parents were splitting up, how when I pick up a guitar I can play away my troubles.
Home was my go to song on those Friday nights in my room when I was the new kid in school and felt like I didn't have a sanctuary that could make me feel safe. This song challenged me to keep high spirits in spite of any hardship I may be faced with at home or anywhere else. Not did it keep me positive, but this song and few others like it became my sanctuary. I didn't need any substance or chemical, my escape was something better. As I would strum my guitar and sing these cherished lyrics, Its's hard for me not to smile and be perfectly content.
