Hello.I am trying to write a graduate level statement of purpose on Educational Research. I wrote a draft but its not coming that well. My problem is when I try to write 'why I became interested in this particular field' I can't go on any further except for saying that I have always wanted to do research because of lack of sufficient educational researches in my own country. Also I added that after finishing my graduate studies I will be able to contribute my new experience and skills to the development of my country etc. I don't think this is near good enough. I can't even explain my own skills as a teacher! I have majored in Literature with Psychology and Sociology as my minor subject. How can I related them to my goal in becoming a researcher in education?

How do you show that you have leadership abilities? I didn't do any community works to prove that. Before even finishing my university I started working at a school. I also tutor 4/5 students who needs extra care. Is there any reason I should add these information to the SOP? How do you answer-Why might you be a stronger candidate for graduate school-and more successful and effective in the profession or field-than other applicants?

Thank you.

As for why you are interested in your particular field, can't you just make up some stories related to your situation?

As for leadership skills, there are more than one way to acquire such skills. You can say you were part of a team involved in a big group project, and you demonstrated leadership skills from there. If all else fails, use your imagination!!

I think that the fact that you tutor shows that you have commitment to what you beleive in, it shows that your also have passion to help others , you just have to apply or connect this towards your passion for research.

In other words it demonstrates your personal characteristics.

good luck!

I believe that you should use the SOP to highlight your strong points. You stated that you couldn't find an interest in the particular field and needed help. Let me ask you then, "Why are you interested in the field then?" Dig deeper. Is it only that the university offers you a good research facility. What interests you about the field? Is the satisfaction to be able to impart knowledge? The smiles and laughter you can create. Or is it simply you would love to know more about education, learn about the fallacies, the approaches etc? These questions all need to be answered by you and only you.

I think that you can use your community work (especially since it involves educating people) to great advantage. Through the example, show how much you love a research in education and how'd it might've change your perception in education, or even tell them (or show them rather) that you are willing to go to great lengths to pursue your dream of educating people (since you might have been bogged down by the varsity responsibilities).

Sit down and think of what you have done up till now. If writing is the problem, find a quiet time to write. Read up more. Let the words flow.

Good luck.

lack of sufficient educational researches in my own country

Well, the Internet has made research studies widely available, so... if you want to do educational research, it should be because you have a PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION that you feel strongly about. You should be focused on making a particular change.

So, how do you make a plan for the big contribution you will make as a researcher? You have to start by reading some recent research articles by researchers whose work you admire.

Discuss recent articles, discuss your phil. of education, and discuss your PLAN.

How do you show that you have leadership abilities? I didn't do any community works to prove that.

It's not about what you did. It's about what you are going to do. A leader is a person with a plan.

Go enjoy some recent articles by researchers whom you admire. Let their work inspire your ideas about en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy_of_education and write a Statement of Purpose that is really about your PURPOSE, your plan.
