My father owns and works with his very own business in the heart of Pakistan, consisting of spinning mills and textiles. Thus, while growing up, I have experienced how a small business rightly functions. Observing my father relentlessly managing his business, both at work and at home, I learned that it wasn't just a way to make money, but rather a way of living. By spending a fraction of the summer in my father's office, I gained knowledge of the fundamentals of business. For the first instance in my life, I was learning about how the unfeigned world functioned. Moreover, my AP economics class profoundly influenced me, as it also dealt with real world issues, and was more of an 'applied subject'. even if I didn't know a concept during a test, I was still more or less able to figure out the answer. I was still confused about my future career, since the sciences also deeply interested me. After contemplating becoming a doctor, or an engineer, my heart ultimately stuck on business, and I chose to take on business administration as a major at college. Carnegie Mellon's excellence in the field, combined with small classes and career orientated opportunities have moved it up my list of colleges and it now lies at the very peak.
The original thing that attracted me to Carnegie is that it is one of the not many universities that have an undergraduate business school. A separate undergraduate business school provides for a more focused scholarship along with a smoother transition to an MBA, which is ultimately my goal. While Tepper's breadth requirements will enable me to develop into a well-rounded individual, the business core will provide me with knowledge not just in management, but also in other branches of business such as finance and marketing. Since Tepper also offers a minor program to undergraduates outside of their main school, I will be able to pursue other areas of interest, particularly one of the sciences, which Carnegie Mellon is renowned for.
Despite its small size, Tepper has an excellent history, and has educated individuals such as Nobel laureates Herbert Simon, and Merton Miller. The size of the community provides for small interactive classes, which in turn lead to a better learning experience. Unlike many other undergraduate business schools, the faculty for undergraduate studies, MBA, and PhD is the same, providing for a better quality of professors.
The many different activities available at CMU, particularly Tepper, can grant me a unique college experience. The spectrum of regional and international conventions and student associations, such as the Asian Business Association, will provide me with leadership qualities and a global perspective. One particular association I admire is the Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Association, through which I will be able to explode entrepreneurship while at the same time interact with students from all over Pittsburgh.
Carnegie Mellon's captures the aura, and energy of Pittsburgh, one of the corporate giants of America. The diverse environment of CMU, combined with the industry and opportunity of Pittsburgh, make CMU a genuine global network. Studying in the home of business giants such as U.S Steel, 84 Lumber, USX, and Alcoa, I will be part of a corporate community. Conferences such as the Business Opportunities Conference at Tepper will give me the opportunity to engage and interact with different companies.
With its academic excellence, unique programs, job opportunities, and various conferences and associations, combined with the city of Pittsburgh, Tepper is the ideal school to study business, and develop as a distinct individual.
