The issue of outsourcing software and call center jobs to India by US companies to cut costs by taking advantage of the cheaper and surplus, English speaking, highly skilled, labor in India to earn higher profits for the share holders of the company has got me concerned.
I've spent one half of my life in the US, and second half in India; imbibing the best of both cultures into a unique biculture called 'ME'.I believe that every person is unique and that their character can be represented via mathematical equation. I can be represented mathematically with a simple integral of the type:
∫ (INDIAN CULTURE+ AMERICAN CULTURE) -dx = ME +C
I want to return to the US to learn to evolve into a world citizen. In the backdrop of the outsource issue, will American universities teach me this? But the issue of outsourcing, fuelled by indiscriminate statements by political leaders, is threatening to destroy the simplicity of my life's equation. I am torn apart like a child between bickering parents. Like this child, I too am unwilling to take sides between the ones I love, and wish that the issue just disappears and leaves me alone to pursue my dream of becoming a neurosurgeon so that can I can have a well paying job and live a decent and respectable life, and more importantly serve mankind to my maximum capcity. Wishful thinking, right?
Wise men say "if wishes were horses, even beggars would ride it". If they really were wise, they'd see that the reality is different. Recently a few Indian students, working off campus in convenience stores, were murdered in cold blood. Though the authorities have established that the students were not victims of hate crimes; on the net, the reality or should I say "virtuality", is quite the contrary. Some internet denizens state that it's a well deserved punishment for the 'theft' American jobs. Others merely act with indifference saying that it was just bad luck and that no one is to be blamed or they give words of caution and advice. and the rest of the internet population just tend to spam the website with useless ads for hair-removal cream.
However worried parents of Indian students are cautioning their children to be careful and watch out for the slightest sign of trouble.
This issue can get out of control, if immediate steps aren't taken to dispel the ignorance surrounding it, and the truth of the matter is made to prevail. Fear affects the growth of the mind and the process of life itself. If this matter snowballs, then all my dreams will be shattered by the harsh, cold grip of despair and my dependants will be severely affected too, as they need me to support the family in the future.
My biculture helps me understand the sentiments and passions in both nations on the contentious issue of outsourcing. It is mostly the fear that is fuelling the problem rather than the facts. Living in the 21st century I strongly believe there is no problem in this world that is so great that it cannot be resolved by intellectual reasoning and contemplation, and no reason is great enough to resort to hate and violence under any circumstance.
Political and community leaders, and subject matter specialists have to present the truth of the matter to the people, and if outsourcing really is hurting the jobs in America, I believe that every nation on the planet would agree to Americans right to self preservation, (i.e., keeping their jobs for themselves).
If the nations of the world can come together to resolve issues such as the ozone hole, global climate change, the WTO trade agreement, etc.; certainly this is shouldn't be as challenging for them. And as a student in the college community, I hope to bring about an awareness showcasing the positives of Indian culture and tell people that India isn't all that bad and that the countries should cooperate together to find a solution to the global phenomenon known as outsourcing.
