My journey through athletics - UBC - Tell us about who you are

Growing up in a big family taught me key social skills at a young age. Having two older brothers forced me to learn compromise and communication, which ultimately formed the foundation of my teamwork skills. My twin sister gives me a balanced perspective on different viewpoints and, most of all, teaches me the value of loyalty. Having a little sister eight years younger than me shows me the importance of patience and empathy at all times.

I am someone who deeply values perseverance, determination, and leadership, shaped mostly through my experiences in sports and community activities. My family, friends, and community see me as both a dedicated athlete and a committed student, someone who strives to excel on and off the field. Sports, particularly soccer, has been central to my life, teaching me the importance of teamwork, leadership, and resilience. Playing many tough sports has taught me that quitting gets me nowhere, and it's only through perseverance that I will truly grow.

One thing I am particularly proud of my journey through athletics; from not making the "high performance" team in grade 7, to having university soccer offers. Avoiding complacency and learning to take initiative were key lessons I learnt along the way, and ever since, I've been committed to putting in extra effort, whether it means training alone or challenging myself academically. This discipline has become a cornerstone of my approach to life, reminding me that success requires consistent hard work.

The students who respond to this prompt always make this common mistake. They always write from their personal perspective rather than the perspective of their parents, friends, and community members. The first half of this essay should be answered using 2nd or 3rd person pronoun descriptors. These should be information coming from people who are describing you to a stranger, which is what a reviewer is. A stranger who wants to learn what character traits these community members find positive or negative about you. It is only in the final part, "What are you most proud of?" based upon the previous statements made by these members, that you can refer to yourself in the first person, in relation to the character trait that you value the most and can exemplify in the best manner in the essay.
