Ben Franklin once said, 'All mankind is divided into three classes: those that are immovable, those that are movable, and those that move.'
Which are you?
Three choices ... hmm? Not sure I am as philosophically profound as UPenn's founder, but surely there are evolutionary periods of self-confidence for those who ultimately become the movers. While not a profound concept, it definitely applies to my persona.
As the youngest of four brothers, I grew up both tentative and insecure, constantly needing more than a gentle push to take action in an evolving world. Conversely, I grew up in a very fortunate environment where requests could be granted at will, and believed that most others lived the same lifestyle. So why change? As my brothers moved on, I gained both confidence and independence both of which were reinforced by my physical size and acceptance into our town's athletic programs, plus with my gentle demeanor, most of my peers started to look to me for life's answers.
Moving onto the next plateau, I realized that moving is achievable through a simple formula: Performance = Motivation x Opportunity x Ability. The factors are geometric. If any factor is zero, there is no outcome. As a mover I use this formula as a life tenet. Employing Hegle's antithesis theory of change, and Newton's confident "aha!" about a simple apple falling, plus my constantly improving grades and campus involvement I have moved as far as the University of Miami can take me. It is time for the next move. Why UPenn? It is more than the quality of education, it is Penn's environment and the peer thought process that motivated me to chose Penn as I move onto life's next challenge AND my Dad's urgings as a double Penn Legacy. I am fortunate to have grown to a level warranting the Penn thought process. As a mover, as opposed to one who is moveable, I live by the Performance equation rules above.
