This is a total long shot, but I thought I would try: Is there anyone out there with advice for me; I am having difficulty attempting to tailor prompt 1 "What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field - such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities - and what you have gained from your involvement. " to the Psychology major that I am applying to at UCLA and the Interdisciplinary Fields Studies major that I am declaring for UCB. Within the IDF major I hope to combine Psych, Soc, and PoliSci but UCLA does not offer this type of major so I placed the emphasis on Psyc.

"My name is Christine and my intended major is Psychology. I became interested in Psychology as a major mainly through the process of choosing one. This process had been quite difficult as my interests seemed to cross academic disciplinary lines. I have a strong fascination with behavioral studies but a directed interest in human behavior in relation to individual and social responsibility in our technological age. I am particularly attracted to examining the challenges faced by the individual and society in light of inevitable conflicts that arise through exposure to vastly different philosophical, theological and political views; and how these challenges are redefining the cultural and political landscape of a global society. I find myself drawn towards examining the individual's role in the world society especially in light of the encroachment of global values on traditional culture. It seemed my interests spanned the psychological, sociological, and political science disciplines. Fortunately, an advisor suggested I investigate psychology and its subfields. This has proved to be invaluable advice as I discovered that my multidisciplinary interests could find common ground and a synthesis within the structure of a Psychology major.

I have always had a curiosity with the nature of behavior and motivation. I am fascinated by the differences and similarities in the ways people (or animals for that matter) interact within their society. My work in the commercial art industry has required me to develop a very layman's level aptitude in understanding of social psychology; but, as much as I am engaged and at times confounded by what drives society as a whole, my interest is more directed to how individual behavior is affected by its influence. With advanced communication technologies becoming more widely available, behavior is not only being affected by our individual social networks but by occurrences well beyond the scope of our own culture. This is something I would like to study.

My personal investment in understanding the role of the individual in society has led me to travel. I do so with the purpose of gaining insight in the creative natures of peoples outside the scope of my own culture. I have traveled much through the Americas, Europe, Eastern Europe, and Africa and I have found that over the span of a few short years, as the internet has become more accessible, conversations that used to revolve mainly around local issues have turned to discussions involving more global issues; and in turn how individuals feel not only about their role in their own society but in relation to other societies.

As global communications grow and cultural boundaries blur, I feel how one approaches these changes not only affects the individual, but their family dynamic and eventually the changing perceptions of societies on a grander scale. I would like to focus my studies in a direction that enables me to examine how the individual meets these challenges. When I think of future academic pursuit, questions come to mind such as: What is the individual's role in a global society? Is technology the new colonization? What challenges are people faced with because of technology and what is our responsibility outside the realm of our own culture? And, are we really that different on an individual psychological level? I have an optimistic outlook that I will be able to address some of these questions through study in the field of psychology.
