Hiya. I'm applying to UGA and I'm having serious problems with the short essay questions they are asking for. The topics are: Tell us an interesting or amusing story about yourself that you have not already shared in your application AND ... Share an experience from your highschool years through which you have gained respect for intellectual, social, or cultural differences.

I have NO idea on how to answer either of these. Honestly. I just need some ideas on where I can start... Please and thank you... :) !!

Well, the first one is pretty easy.
Write something that can show yourself, that you didn't write about in the CommonApp.

And the second one,
During the last 3 years, what experience, specifically, have you had that made you see the world differently.

I mean, honestly, though they are saying different things. Colleges are all making us writing the same topic.

You can have a lot of fun with this, as it should be fairly easy to think of some cute thing you did as a kid, some little tidbits thrown in to show who you are, for example, life on the farm...fishin' with pa...first crush, job, pet.

In the second one, was there some lesson you learned in H.S. or some problem eventually resolved concerning one of these?
intellectual, social, or cultural differences.

Good luck with it!

WELL! First off, GOOOOOOOO DAWGS! Sic 'em! Woof Woof Woof! My husband and I are HUGE DAWGS fans! :)

I always loved essays like this....

I always used these two examples:
1. I rebuilt a 1967 Mustang during my senior year of high school
2. I was a student ambassador with the People-to-People Student Ambassador Program and traveled to England, France, Greece, and Italy for three weeks when I was 15.

Do you have any cool, unique things like that going for you? What sets you apart from everyone else? Do you have any volunteer service? Think of things that you would tell someone to WOW them. These essays are to get the board interested in you as a person, not as a student ID number, not as a transcript, not as a person on a list of long applicants, not as an average person....

Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress and let us help you through this! :)

And don't forget, you can always make something up, or alter details of a real event in your life to make it seem more interesting than it actually was. This greatly expands your pool of potential material. Also, if you are determined to write about something that really happened, but can't think of anything, try asking your family and friends for suggestions. I'm sure someone who knows you can think of at least one interesting or humorous anecdote about you. As for the second prompt, the key phrase is "respect for intellectual, social, or cultural differences." At some point during your high school experience, you must have encountered ideas that were different from your own, so tell the reader about a time this happened to you.

i guess for the first prompt , like what sean said, asking your family members might be a good idea.

as for the second prompt, i guess talking about social / cultural differences seems easier. it can be something like you meeting a person from a different race / culture and how you learnt something from him.
