4. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.' - Aristotle. The intellectual, social and cultural differences embraced by the University of Maryland are integral to the fabric of our community. The strength of the University is realized through the contributions of every member of our campus. We understand each individual is a result of his/her personal background and experiences. Describe the parts that add up to the sum of you.

I have always known that I am different from my peers. Upon reflecting on my experiences, and myself to identify the parts that add up to the sum of me I see what differentiates me from other people. I feel that the most valuable parts of me are, my independence, and my social skills.

Since I was a child I have always taken care of my own issues with minimal help from my parents. When my parents are away I cook diner, clean up after myself, do my laundry and I rely on myself to make sure my schoolwork is finished and I ready for class. It wasn't until recently that I realized my self-sufficiency. When I first meet with my Eagle Scout advisor he told me he was amazed I already had a possible Eagle Scout project and a plan of action to accomplish it. My independence is a key part of me.

I am an extravert, I love interacting with others and I have always been outgoing. A significant part of my personality is my adeptness and comfort in social interaction. I have been complimented on my ability to connect with my peer and people of different ages. I have created relationships with all of my peers and teachers and even become friends with teachers I haven't had.

3. 'Seek the fashion which truly fits and befits you. You will always be in fashion if you are true to yourself, and only if you are true to yourself. You might, of course, rightly wear that style which is emblazoned on the fashion magazines of the day, or you might not.' - Maya Angelou. Other than fashion, what medium(s) do you choose for self-expression and why?

Since I was very little I have always had many interests such as drawing, skateboarding, woodworking and a long list of other. Although I have had many hobbies, all they are, are hobbies. I have never felt that the expression of myself could lie in a painting of mine, or the style of skateboarding I had. For me the medium I choose to express myself has always been my voice. I feel that no other medium can communicate myself the way that my words and demeanor can.

I am a very outgoing person and I love social interaction whether it is with my friends, parents, or elders. When talking to different people I express myself differently and my voice and appearance allow me to do that appropriately. When I speak in class I can intelligently convey my perspective to our discussion. When I talk with my friends I use my speech to joke around or tell a story.

Speech allows me to describe all of my thoughts and emotions, it allows me to make others laugh, it allows me connect with others and form relationships. For me the ultimate form of expression is my voice.
