Hi everyone!
I'm writing a 1600 word assignment at the moment.
1.) From a stylistic point of view, would it be better to divide one large point into two manageable paragraphs of, say, 150 words each, or just lump it all together? The 300 words are all about the same topic, but it seems to read clearer for me when it's divided.
2.) I divided the two sections into separate topics, how would I make it known at the end of the first paragraph that I'm going to develop the point further in the next paragraph? (I would normally draw a conclusion in the last sentence of a paragraph.)
Thanks for reading. I'd love to get some feedback back from you guys, since this is my first post here :)
Thanks again, schroodles
to answer your first point i would use two paragraphs, it makes the people reading it less likely to think that your relevant points are just run on sentences
the second point - use a connecting sentence that makes the second paragraph relevant. it would also be good if you made the two paragraphs slightly different in terms of their points.
Hope that helped,
John
Good advice! That helped a lot.
Thanks, John.
Yep, I agree that it is best to split them into 2. I like paragraphs to be about 100 words. People's attention can get all fouled up, and they have trouble experiencing what you want them to experience as they read.
For question 2, it is a matter of using a key word from the last sentence of the previous paragraph to introduce the next paragraph as a transition.
(new paragraph, for example)
By using the method described above to make a transition, you can lead the reader's attention along gracefully. Just choose a good word or phrase to use again in the first sentence of the paragraph that'll be developing a point from the previous paragraph, and ...
In the example above, I used the word transition to make a graceful transition.
