Hello, I am currently applying to the United States Naval Academy and I have to write a 300 to 500 word essay on the following..
1) Describe what led to your initial interest in the naval service and how the Naval Academy will help you achieve your long range goals, and

(2) Describe a personal experience you have had which you feel has contributed to your own character development and integrity.

And.. I have no idea where to start I am stuck. If anyone could please help I will appreciate that so much. Thank you

1) Why are you interested in the Navy? Was your family in the Navy? Do you like the Navy more than the Marines of the AFA for a certain reason? Do you have any goals after serving in the navy? Without knowing you, it's hard for me to tell you what to write. What do you hope to do in the Navy?

2)Has anyone ever done anything that inspired you to be a better person? Maybe someone who did something selfless for you...? (For me, personally, I would write about a family friend who called me out on one of my bad habits. She asked to speak to me privately, and then asked me why I was being so bitter toward my family. I hadn't realized until I considered my previous actions that evening that I had been so cold and distant. I had been that way for nearly that entire previous year. I struggled to overcome my own personal bitterness, but when I told her that what I was struggling with, she encouraged me to try to be kinder to others. She texted me weekly encouragements and knock-knock jokes to tell people. These corny yet loving gestures inspired me to leave the same impression on other people. Because of her devotion to me in my life, my own character and integrity was improved.) Perhaps this example helps you formulate your own ideas.

Good luck!

Christina, it's actually quiet good that you have a guideline in writing this essay, it makes it easier to write and to highlight the importance of your statement and to let the academy know that you will render unwavering service to the Naval Academy.

I have written an additional guideline for you.

- Know the mission of the academy
- their vision
- rules and regulations
- mention your academic achievements
- what led you to the academy
- what are your aspirations
- how will you support yourself in attaining your goals
- how does the naval service affect you as a human being, your behavior , your morals and your life as a whole
- lastly write about what you can do to contribute to the community as a naval serviceman,

I hope that with this guideline you will be able to come up with your statement, when you do, post it here on EF so we can help you further.

Should my introduction start with the mission of the academy? And then later start explaining how I come from a dedicated Navy family and also from there begin how they have inspired me to also attend the academy?

@Cristina, yes I believe to start with mission statement of the academy will be a great start of your essay.
I'd like to add a few more points for you;

Sample essay:

( write the Naval Academy mission statement) and this is the mission I want to embody and live by. I came from a well respected Military family who makes sure that discipline above all is practiced within and among ourselves. ( then continue this statement talking about your family, their beliefs, the practice and how they influenced and motivate you in taking this path towards the Naval academy)

The body:

The body of the essay should post your willingness to endure the training, the process and the will to conquer the academy and all it's glory.

The conclusion:

The conclusion will be the determining factor of your application, share your insights and what you can contribute to the institution for greater welfare and for the advancement of the academy.

I'm hoping to see your draft here on EF so we can help you further.
