Hi there, I am unsure how to use this site so I apologize if I am posting in the wrong place.
I have to write an essay of my choice (2000 words). I am a first year health student. I have created the title " The Use of Hospital Data to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality".
I have been reading various "how to write an essay" books and the first thing they tell you to do is to analyze the concepts hidden in the title.
So what concepts are hidden in my title? Why do I need to find the concepts?
Also to get high marks how do I know what is the best information to include in the essay? How do I structure my essay, and what is a good structure?
Hope someone can help as I really don't know much about writing an academic essay.
Thanks,
Helen.
Mortality, Mortality - define and give more information
Methods of data collection. Problems associated...
explain if this information is valid in your region. for example, in the US malaria related issues wouldn't be a very effective topic
Define each major thing (mortality, morbidity etc) at some point not too far from the beginning or at the beginning.
Establish credibility. Why would we want to listen to you? What have you done on the subject or who do you know? Are you citing someone? It's okay if you don't know enough as far as you can cite those who do.
Why is the topic important?
Go on from here
Thanks hexxcoat much appreciated
Every academic essay should have some kind of introductory paragraph where you explain what you are going to write about and give some background information on your topic. Then you have body paragraphs where you elaborate on your topic. You finish with a conclusion, which basically sums up what you have written.
I don't know what essay books you've been reading, but it's very strange to write an essay about the title of your essay. If your title is "The Use of Hospital Data to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality," then your essay is about the use of hospital data to reduce morbidity and mortality. So, you could use your introductory paragraph to define morbidity and mortality, as hexxcoat said. Maybe open with a couple-of-sentence-story about someone who got sick or died because of problems with hospital data to make readers interested and sort of explain why this topic is so important. Then explain what topics you are going to cover in one sentence (at most) per topic.
The rest of your essay will be broken up into sub-topics. There are many things you write about contained under the title: The Use of Hospital Data to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality. How do different hospitals organize their data? Are there some that don't record data at all? How often do mistakes occur, and why do they occur? What happens to the patients when these kinds of mistakes occur? What kinds of diseases could be contagious or deadly if treated the wrong way?
Whatever questions you choose to answer (you should have at least three, depending on how much you want to write about each topic), you'll need to do some research. You can quote websites or books in your essay, but you'll need to cite them parenthetically (if you don't know how, you can go to owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/, but you should find out whether your teacher wants your essay in APA or MLA format, or some other format). If you don't want to try and figure that out, just make sure to put anything you get from another source into your own words.
So...
Intro - Opening that engages the reader, define your major terms in the title, state what topics you are going to talk about
Body #1
Body #2
Body #3
...However many paragraphs you're going to have
Conclusion - Summarize what you said (one sentence per topic, a little more specific than what you stated in your intro), Re-emphasize why this is an important topic
Thanks for all your help so far everyone.
How does this seem for an opening paragraph?
Paragraph 1 Introduction
(i)Mortality is the frequency of deaths in a particular hospital or area. Morbidity is the proportion of disease in a particular hospital or area. All activity that occurs in a hospital including morbidity and mortality is recorded and put onto a data base. The data consists of a wide range of information on the individual patients admitted to hospitals. Information such as disease, infections, death rates, and locations of hospitals are included. (ii) This data can be used to perform research on specific hospitals. Once specific data is accumulated it can be used to remedy the issues by exploration of the reasons behind the problems. (iii) But while this data is readily available it does not seem to be used to its full potential. There are many examples of instances where data could have been used to reduce morbidity and mortality but it has not. Furthermore it seems as though lives are being lost and people are suffering due to the systematic use of gagging orders to prevent the information needed to help reduce death, disease and infection from being used. The reasons behind why data is not being used to its full potential along with the holding back of information, the reasons, and the people involved needs to be investigated.
