STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
VALLURI MANOJ KUMAR
Applying to Masters in Petroleum Engineering
The 20 years of my mental evolution so far have shared one thing in common, an enthusiasm to grow, learn and contribute. My concern is to find a solution to the energy crisis with petroleum production demanding better and cheaper techniques to bring down the rocketing fuel costs, an answer I set out to find since I took up Chemical engineering at the prestigious Birla Institute of technology and Science, Pilani.
In my fourth semester, I did a computer oriented project on "A Study of Fractional Distillation Petroleum" and studied the salient aspects of the crude/atmospheric distillation of petroleum. I went on to research various ways to optimize the yield of middle distillates through crude distillation, precisely the reason I worked on implementation of a pre-flash column before the furnace of the distillation unit. The study showed that doing so would decrease the energy requirement as was also verified by implementing a simulated prototype on ASPEN Plus. The research done and the results whetted my desire to dig further into this field.
Owing to the course Chemical process technologies, my knowledge of the upstream and downstream sectors of petroleum engineering was compounded. This helped me pursue an internship in the leading oil exploration company of India, OIL AND NATURAL GAS CORPORATION, where I worked as a trainee under the Chief engineer (well services) and Chief engineer (production). A thoroughly informative two months where I worked on understanding hydro-fracturing and Acidization in oil wells with basic inputs on the geophysics of well drilling, I had the opportunity to engage in fruitful discussions with the engineers at the organization. I also worked with the chief engineer of Well Stimulation Services on loss of light distillates during the standing period of crude at the Group Gathering Station (GGS) due to which a significant portion of light distillates was lost due to flashing into the atmosphere.
What I wish to achieve stems from my experiences and motivation to enhance the yield of distillation, which is less than 5% in some of the countries of the world today, which is solely the reason why India exports more than 70% of its domestic requirement from abroad. Continuing my optimization studies through implementation of pre-flash strategies and a detailed study and research on the phase equilibrium computations of crude, the direction and motive of my studies would be to increase the output of middle distillates per ton of crude and reduce the loss of light components thereby enhancing the yield.
The aforementioned research experience and motives have driven me to pursue graduate studies in petroleum engineering. The reason I am applying to your esteemed university is that located in XXX, University XXX offers one of the best graduate programs in Petroleum engineering in the world with top notch research facilities and boasts of world class faculty. Especially, I have found the work of Dr.XXX in the field of XXX to be in perfect agreement with my line of research and I'm looking forward to work with him/her. I wish to contribute to the research at your university and that globally, thereby I solely dedicate the upcoming 5-6 years of my life to working on addressing the issues that are of utmost importance in the field of petroleum production in the path to fulfill my academic objectives.
