My Statement of Purpose - Doctoral Program in Marketing at Michigan State University
I am applying for admission to the Ph.D. program in Marketing at the School of Business Administration, Wayne State University because I want a career in the research and teaching of marketing strategies. In particular, I am interested in factors that affect the competitive performance of a business concern, and the manner in which changes in technology affect an organization's structure, long-term business strategy, product development and standard systems. In order to gain an appreciation of these and associated issues, it is vital for me to have a strong grounding in Marketing, Economics, Supply Chain Management, and issues coupled with Information Technology, as well as gain a General Management viewpoint.
I believe that the Ph.D. program in Business Administration (with concentration in Marketing) would be invaluable in helping me achieve these objectives in the long term. It would enable me to channel my quantitative and theoretical skills in analyzing marketing issues and would open up new avenues in research and implementation. Subsequent to earning a Ph.D., I would like to apply for a faculty position at a leading university; and carry on investigate issues concerned with technology as it affects marketing strategy and systems.
Marketing is the undetectable might that propels the modern business world onward. With recent developments in communication technology, the marketing field has been modernized, with new opportunities and new potential downsides. With the globalization of business, the success or failure of international marketing campaigns is unquestionably a powerful factor in the success or failure of modern companies. In India however, the field of marketing remains relatively underdeveloped and ignored, however, and the educational opportunities are likewise insufficient for my goals.
In contrast, US businesses place great emphasis on advertising and marketing, and the marketing techniques are accordingly advanced and well-established here. I am confident that, having exhausted many of the training opportunities available in India, the resources available in your doctoral program at Michigan State University are ideal for taking my career to the next level.
I was initially attracted to the field of marketing because I find it to be a very dynamic and creativity-based field. In addition, marketing is a fast-growing discipline, encircling a wide area of activities within the community such as working with private and nonprofit organizations for research. I was first exposed to marketing while doing my undergraduate studies in Engineering. I took courses related to Industrial marketing, such as International Marketing, Advertising and Marketing Management as electives. In addition to these courses, I examined several case studies and devised specific solutions for particular problems; through these courses, I grew familiar with the basic theories and applications of marketing.
After completing my Bachelor's degree in Engineering, I enrolled myself for a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management at Indian Institute of Planning and Management, New Delhi due to my keen interest in marketing. I quickly developed great interest in the field of marketing. As a result, I sought work as an intern at Mermet International Ltd., a French-based company which sells Interior Decorative Accessories, during the summer vacation. I worked as a Quality Control Assistant, a role I would occupy for the next four months. In this position, I gained a more in-depth and practical understanding of marketing, while I concurrently learned about the theoretical side of marketing in the university. Although I found this position rewarding and challenging, I have decided that my academic foundation is inadequate for achieving my career goals, and further research and training in your doctoral program will solidify my expertise and help me create more international opportunities for companies such as this in my future career.
I have several concrete goals for my graduate experience in India. I hope to learn the latest marketing techniques & theories, while also expanding my horizons and developing a broader, more international outlook. I look forward to interacting with students of different nationalities and diverse backgrounds, which will provide me with a deeper understanding of different cultures and mindsets. Overall, I feel that these attributes of your master's program will help to increase my overall effectiveness in the business world and give me a unique advantage in my future career.
I have chosen to study at the School of Business Administration at Wayne State University for several reasons. I have heard about WSU's Ph.D. program in Marketing from my business school professors and am impressed with the emphasis placed on technical and analytical skills, general management orientation and rigorous research methodology. The School's strengths in research, marketing, supply chain management and information management are commensurate with my research interests. The faculty's reputation for excellent teaching, challenging coursework and the excellent facilities are added attractions.
While the study of and research in marketing is my prime objective today, my interests in music, reading, travel and nature help me maintain a sense of perspective in life. I have organized and participated in a number of extra-curricular activities like dancing, singing and dumb charades during my college days.
After completion of the doctoral program, I plan to invest more time on research and academic teaching and apply my skills toward expanding business ideas. I know that the knowledge and experience I gain in your doctoral program will be essential in helping me make a contribution to our community. I hope that the admissions committee finds my background and strengths commensurate with the requirements of WSU's Ph.D. program in Marketing at the School of Business Administration
