Dear All,

I would much appreciate if you could review and advise my SOP for PhD Petroleum Engineering study. Please kindly let me know where I should amend. Thank you very much for your help.

My first fascination to petroleum happened during my second year of engineering school when I attended a worldwide oilfield services company seminar where the critical role of petroleum, the enormous utilized equipment and the compelling lifestyle of working at oilfield were presented. I was entirely captivated by the natural resource. It has gradually become my professional aspiration and ultimately driven me to a definite desire as a petroleum expert.

In my undergraduate years in Chemical Engineering, I acquired a strong and comprehensive background in the fundamentals of chemical process and petroleum processing technologies by concentrating my endeavors on specific subjects and exposing myself to hands-on experiments. In order to dig further into the petroleum sector, I worked on an intensive project given by PetroVietnam called Evaluate DungQuat Refinery's Alternative Crude Oil Capabilities at Research and Development Center for Petroleum Processing. This was a significant study because main feedstock supply capability for the plant would be diminished in next few years. I was in charge of designing a simulated paradigm on ASPEN PIMS. The prototype was one of the main factors to successfully achieve an optimal feedstock selection from different sources for the project.

My passion for petroleum never ends and has been much inspired when I have worked for Halliburton Energy Services Company as Field Engineer-Testing and Subsea. Specialized technical training courses and challenging field assignments offered me an insightful vision toward oil and gas exploration and production. Since I was promoted to a Technical Professional, I have taken responsibility for technical supports, and been involved in multinational projects from Vietnam, Thailand, and Japan to Bangladesh. Multicultural work environment substantially enriches my experience. Furthermore, I have had opportunities to work with Halliburton Global Team in complex well testing projects; this is a great chance to keep myself focused on a continuous professional and personal development.

My experiences with the Global Team are precious. I become, however, to realize that there is an intangible productivity gap between us. While working on challenging tasks, I marvel at their exceptional ability to appraise and propose excellent advice. Their skills do not only require experience, but also need profound petroleum knowledge. It has driven me to pursue a PhD degree in Petroleum Engineering to enhance my knowledge for a deeper understanding of specific subjects and broaden my perspectives in the field.

The graduate program would equip me with the tools necessary to effectively achieve my professional goals. It would be a logical next step in my career.

Colorado School of Mines offers an integrated and impressive curriculum would help me to perfect my skills in various academic subjects and petroleum disciplines. What particularly excite me about the school are its faculty research centers where intensive research projects in all facets of the petroleum industry are conducted. Additionally, the diversity of experiences that CSM's students bring with them to the classroom is special values. I am applying to CSM to also surround myself with both students and faculty of the highest caliber. The PhD program in CSM would equip me with the tools necessary to effectively achieve my professional goals. It would be a logical next step in my career and I look forward to the opportunity.

Thank & Warm Regards,
Ngoc Quy

I find this is a well written SOP. You have covered all important aspects. I wish if you elaborated a little more on your future goals.

Good Job and good luck! :)
