I'm applying to several grad schools for admission to PhD program in Telecommunication Engineering. Here is my first draft. Please tell me ways to improve it.
After acquiring a sound foundation and excelling in the Bachelor of Engineering(B.E.)program in the Electronics and Telecommunication Department at ___________College, I now aspire to pursue graduate studies. My ultimate career aim is to be an accomplished teacher of Telecommunications. With that aim in view, I would like to pursue the PhD program in __________ at ____________. I outline my academic and research accomplishments, career objectives and motivation below.
The desire to pursue a postgraduate course in Telecommunications was conceived in me during my undergraduate years while following the courses on 'Telephony','Telegraphy' and 'Digital Communication Systems'. In one single year, I was introduced to the outdated telecommunication systems, as well as the various modern electronic exchanges. The reason for this was mainly pedagogical, to help us comprehend the evolution of telecommunication over the years. The world had witnessed revolutionary changes in telecommunication practices over a very short span, and this development rate was only expected to increase exponentially. As a result, in this field, I began to see the potential for further exploration. Also, since developing countries like India still have many of those outdated telecommunication systems operational, the ability to understand their working only added to my fascination for the subject.
In my third year, I was awarded the prestigious 'Alumni Association Scholarship' by the notary alumni of our college, for excellence in academics. One of the alumni, Mr.____________, while congratulating me, told me that this scholarship was an incentive for us, not only to work harder to achieve our goals, but to eventually give back something to the society. I realized that the best way to do that was through education. Thus, I chose the noble profession of teaching as my ultimate goal.
In order to gain experience in research, I undertook summer internship with National Instruments(NI) Lab, Indian Institute of Technology-Rajasthan. After collaboration and detailed discussions with 5 exceptionally talented and dedicated team members, and working under an excellent guide and mentor in the form of Prof.Sandeep Yadav, I realised the importance of qualities like a clear conceptual understanding, a well-focussed mind, patience and integrity in the field of research. I feel that I possess these qualities in good measure. The importance of perseverance and team-effort was driven home to me during my work with NI. The experience at NI Lab helped me in courses like Global Positioning Systems and Navigation Systems in which we worked on projects as a team.
During my internship, I worked on a project which was based on generation of GPS L5 signal. This project creates waveform creation Virtual Instruments (VI's) for GPS L5 as per standards respectively. The project was focused on physical layer implementation of this standard. During the project, VI's for generation of GPS signal of Link 1(Frequency 1575.42 MHz) and Link 2(Frequency 1227.60 MHz) were studied, and their respective signal and code generations were understood. Subsequently, LabVIEW Virtual Instruments were created which will be used for signal generation using NI- RFSG instrument to generate GPS signal of Link 5 (Frequency 1176.45 MHz).
During my tenure as the co-ordinator of the Debating Club at our college, with the help of my good communication skills and sound technical knowledge, I organized numerous technical debates and sessions. The main purpose of these sessions, along with imparting beyond-textbook technical knowledge, was to emphasise the importance of self-expression. This experience increased my self-confidence and further substantiated my choice of research and teaching as a career objective.
After the doctoral studies I visualize myself as a productive researcher as well as an active faculty member. I was inspired by the academic environment at home, my father serving as a Professor of Psychology in J.N.V. University for the past 30 years and my mother, a senior secondary school teacher. Both of them despise the present commercialized, hackneyed methods of education, and have infused the same ideals in me.
In selecting ___________ University, I was influenced by the numerous research opportunities that your school provides regarding _____________. I am also excited about working under the distinguished faculty, namely Prof.________ and Prof. __________, whose work in the field of ________ inspired me to pursue further research in the same. I have gone through the research interests of the faculty and I am excited to find that my area of focus has been well represented through the ongoing projects. In corresponding with a current student, __________, I leaned of the balance between academic and recreational environment maintained at your school, necessary both for intellectual growth and personality development, something that I ardently seek in a grad school.
Enriched with these experiences, I realized that Graduate Study in a reputable institute would help me proceed in my intended direction. Subsequently, I find the ____________ program at your university, the eminent faculty, ongoing research areas that parallel my interests, and unmatched facilities, the ideal choice.
A doctoral program in your university, with its highly competitive and research-oriented environment, would provide me the correct exposure and guidance towards achieving my ultimate objective. In keeping with the high standards set by your institution, I believe, with my credentials, you will find me a suitable candidate. Kindly consider me for admission with full financial aid.
